ABOUT THE YOUTH & EDUCATION INITIATIVE:
- The Youth & Education Initiative works closely with Ocean Wise's conservation initiatives (Seaforestation, Whales, Seafood and Plastics) to translate our world-class conservation research, knowledge and actions into exciting and engaging programs that empower individuals and communities to make meaningful behavioural changes that positively impact our ocean._
- The Education team, as part of the Youth & Education Initiative, empowers K12 students and their communities and equips them with skills to protect and restore our ocean through virtual programs that include Aquaclasses and Pro-D Workshops; asynchronous resources such as Discovery Kits and Education Kits for formal and informal educators; and inperson programs like Ocean Wise Sea Dome and other out in the community outreach programs._
ROLE OVERVIEW:
- This job is based in Vancouver, BC, Canada._
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Oversees education programs at Ocean Wise by:
- Working with the education team in the development and implementation of new projects;
- Deliver virtual education programs;
- Providing training and support to education programs;
- Incorporate pedagogies and curriculums into programming and resources;
- Continually review and improve education program content, delivery, and resources.
- Oversee/support continued training of staff internally or externally on education best practices virtually and inperson;
- Identify, create, coordinate, and deliver professional development workshops;
- Strategically engage with partners via collaboration, consultation, events, promotions, and program delivery;
- Identify, coordinate, and deliver conference, forum, dialogue style youth opportunities nationally and internationally;
- Supervise Education Coordinators and Educators in project completion, logistics, and supporting staff;
- Assist in analytics tracking and reporting;
- Maintain general understanding of ocean conservation. Training can be provided.
Oversees Education Coordinator(s) by:
- Recruiting, scheduling and providing technical support for internal and external presenters;
- Assisting with the design and implementation of technical training programs for all education staff;
- Leading and supporting Education staff in content creation and redevelopment projects;
- Designing customized programs for a variety of groups including home schools, Youth Serving Agencies and International Conservation Groups;
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors' Degree in Science, Education, Conservation, or relevant field;
- Knowledge of marine biology, ocean conservation, issues and research;
- A minimum of 23 years of work experience in education delivery and development, teaching, or related fields;
- Experience delivering technology enhanced educational programs for school age students;
- Experience with project management, logistics and complex problem solving;
- Public speaking skills and experience working with groups of all sizes;
- BC Teaching Certificate preferred.
Skills:
- Able to communicate effectively with audiences of all ages and learning abilities;
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and presentation skills;
- Ability to work as a cooperative member of a dynamic team, as well as independently;
- Strong problem solving and organizational skills, must be creative, flexible, and enthusiastic with a positive attitude;
- Strong customer service skills and able to interact with people of all ages;
- Ability to multitask with keen attention to detail, respond to last minute changes, and maintain ability to take leadership and be selfsufficient with a flexible attitude;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs;
- Working knowledge of video conferencing platforms such as MS Teams, Zoom etc.;
- Familiarity with Adobe Suite programs especially Adobe Premier Pro an asset;
- Active demonstration of Ocean Wise's values and mission;
- Experience working in a nonprofit organization an asset.
Working Conditions
- The incumbent will work in a shared office environment with the usual ergonomic risks;
- The position is primarily nonphysical however some shifting and lifting is required, and may also involve driving, flying, sitting or standing;
- Extended periods of talking may be required;
- Available to work Monday through Friday. Shift times may vary based on bookings such as weekends and evenings;
- Will be delivering programs and participating in meetings across time zones;
- Lifting heavy objects on occasion applicants must be able to lift and move 20 Kgs to chest level;
- Ability to work remotely when needed.
