    The Corporate Underwriting Specialist provides strategy support through research, analysis, and recommendations to deliver improvement initiatives (i.e., quality control frameworks, automation) that have a clear, positive, and direct impact on portfolio and segment performance in alignment with the Commercial/Personal Underwriting strategy. Provides referral expertise through technical guidance and an understanding of market conditions and emerging trends. Contributes to the development of new products and corporate guidelines that benefit the quality of regional underwriting performance. Challenges the status quo methods, practices, and procedures.

    Key Accountabilities

    Business Strategy & Insights

    • Contributes to the development of strategies through research, analysis, recommendations and drives the development of corporate underwriting guidelines (i.e. eligibility rules/criteria) to effectively control insurance risks, support product compliance and positively impact profitability.
    • Performs research and analysis of the industry and company data to contribute towards assigned initiatives.
    • Contributes to the development of a continuous improvement model.
    • Drives the development and implementation of innovative tools/products and product enhancements across all Canadian jurisdictions.
    • Participates in strategy/management meetings; presents recommendations and champions the development and implementation of business change.
    • Conducts business and UW due diligence including regulatory and compliance research.
    • Conducts growth and profitability analysis.
    • Fosters productive relationships with the regions and other key business partners.

    Compliance & Audit

    • Provides objective, independent, risk based underwriting quality and control evaluation of the commercial/personal portfolio.
    • Manages & monitors the design and execution of underwriting guidelines and controls to ensure compliance and alignment with corporate underwriting standards.
    • Reviews and enhances audit programs and collaborates with Operations and Corporate Audit and leads the development of new quality assurance program for Underwriting.
    • Handles referral request that are made on accounts beyond the authorities of regional underwriting management.
    • Contributes to development and maintenance of QC strategy and framework. Supports the development and monitoring of Quality Assurance practice.
    • Develops key quality indicators for UW processes and the monitoring processes; QC/consistency review of audits -- ensures consistency in interpretation of expectations by reviewers (i.e. ensures UWs conducting audits are doing so consistently)
    • Identifies areas for improving efficiencies i.e. automation, in the QC program.
    • Provides support to UW Ops with internal and external audit inquiries.
    • Audits use of underwriting tools and recommends changes to tools and/or procedures.

    Underwriting Profitability Analysis

    • Participates in the management of the profitability of the portfolio by regular monitoring of KPIs, analyzing the data and developing action plans to remedy existing trends or as they emerge.
    • Works in collaboration with Loss Control to align objectives to underwriting strategy, driving the importance of loss control within the underwriting community, and providing input to loss control methodology.
    • Works closely with Pricing and IT for system enhancements and development of all underwriting tools and strategies, including signing off on system requirements and functional specifications to ensure they reflect business needs

    Corporate Management

    • Enables the success of programs and policies that are in alignment with corporate, strategic, and divisional strategies.
    • Manages risk within area of authority.
    • Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility.

    Education and Experience

    • A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business.
    • Six years of Commercial Property and Casualty Underwriting experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Skill in risk-based underwriting quality and control evaluation.
    • Knowledge of pricing and individualized rating models.
    • Knowledge of the applicable policy wordings, endorsements, products, philosophies, risk information sources along with underwriting guidelines, and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the applicable regulatory environment.
    • Ability to interpret and apply jurisdictional laws and regulations.
    • Ability to analyze and interpret relevant data to identify trends or issues and recommend solutions.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, underwriting systems, and other related systems.
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Strong interpersonal, presentation and communications skills
    • Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities and deliver results.
    Pay Range:$88, $117,791.00
