About the branch

:


The Fire and Life Safety branch provides departmental coordination and support in developing and implementing fire prevention related safety management programs.

The branch consists of the Fire Marshal's Office, which protects lives and property from structural fires and other emergencies, and operates enforcement, fire protection, suppression, and safety-related programs.

The Fire Marshal's Office includes both employees and volunteers.


About the role

:


The Director of Fire and Life safety is responsible for planning, direction, leading, and evaluating the territory's fire protection program through providing leadership and strategic vision to the Fire and Life Safety branch which includes a team of Deputy Fire Marshals, administrative staff, and the Yukon's 16 community fire departments.

In addition to providing branch and fire department leadership, the Director oversees and provides direction to the Deputy Fire Marshals in the investigations of various types of fires for cause and origin, and is responsible for the interpretation, enforcement, and oversight of aspects of multiple pieces of legislation and regulations including the _Fire Prevention act_, _Storage Tank Regulations_, _Gasoline Handling Act_, _Environmental Act_, and _Child Care Act_.


The Director role also performs the duties of the Yukon Government Fire Marshal which involves overseeing the development, monitoring and evaluation of the _Fire Prevention Act_, and as required carries out the functions of the Chief Fire Officer of the Yukon to fulfill the duties of Incident Commander during emergency incidents.

Essential Qualifications

:

  • Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Leadership or related fields;
  • Experience working with federal, provincial/territorial governments, municipal governments, and/or First Nations;
  • Experience providing direction and strategic leadership in a government or emergency response environment;
  • Experience interpreting and enforcing legislation and regulations; and
  • Experience managing human, financial, and material resources.
  • Education related to emergency or risk management may be considered an asset.
  • Fire protection certifications may be considered an asset (NFPA 101, NFPA 133 Fire Investigator, Level 1 Fire Prevention, etc.).

Job Requirements


This position requires some travel to communities and at times may be required to travel by fixed or rotary winged aircrafts.
