First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Division

The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Division is dedicated to supporting change across the education system to close the systemic achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and non-Indigenous students, and to ensure that all Alberta students are knowledgeable, understanding and respectful of the rich diversity of Indigenous peoples, including their cultures, language and histories; the importance of treaties; and the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.


The work of the branch involves engagement across all levels and sectors of the First Nations education systems to impact all Alberta students and teachers, as well as focussing specifically on supporting First Nations student success.


Role Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Director, First Nations Education, North Region, the Manager, First Nations North is responsible for developing and implementing plans, and for overseeing a broad scope of initiatives within the education system that eliminate the achievement gap between First Nations and other students in Alberta.

This position leads project implementation with a wide range of partners representing diverse interests. This work includes extensive engagement with external stakeholders including senior officials, education stakeholders, and community representatives. The position is also required to monitor and manage Ministry investments, including grant and other funding agreements.


This position is responsible for supervising a unit of analysts and requires exceptional human relations, diplomacy and negotiation skills are required for this position as is specialized experience working with First Nations communities and organizations, in-depth experience navigating First Nations political contexts and protocols.

On an everyday basis, creative solutions are required to address challenges and problems where there has been no precedent and in an environment that is continually shifting.

In addition, strong political acumen is required.


  • Lead planning and project implementation with partners.
  • Supporting development of Alberta Education and Government of Alberta recommendations for the establishment of a First Nations education system in Alberta. This includes developing plans and supporting First Nations in systemic approaches to education (e.g. First Nations Education Authorities). The Manager closely leads the development of project charters and implementation plans. The Manager provides technical advice and intensive support to partners in the development of implementation plans, and puts forward key funding advice and recommendations.
  • Creating new opportunities for First Nations partners to implement initiatives to improve outcomes for First Nations students. This includes leading the development of internal plans for the extension of provincial education initiatives to First Nations and other innovative approaches by working closely with internal and external partners to identify priorities and develop solutions that effectively meet the needs of First Nations students.
  • Supporting intergovernmental frameworks, agreements and processes with First Nations partners in northern Alberta. Education Protocol Tables Created by the Premier, these tables require ongoing dialogue and negotiation at technical levels (led by the Manager) as well as at Senior Official levels in the development of work plans and implementation plans.
  • This position is responsible for providing supervision to the First Nations, North unit in the First Nations Education sector.
  • Supervising staff to implement branch and division project plans and priority Indigenous initiatives.
  • Manages and supervises staff in the preparation of highquality briefings, speaking notes, responses, draft correspondence for the Assistant Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister and Minister and other senior executives to ensure timely and appropriate advice regarding Indigenous education issues.
