Job Summary


The Government Relations Specialist role provides support and advice to the Director of Public Affairs within the president's office to identify and develop government relations approaches that align with Mohawk College's strategic plan and priorities, advocacy and engagement with elected and government officials on priorities and goals.


This role will support and lead the positioning of Mohawk College as a key partner with governments through the continued development and furthering the college's relationships with the three levels of government, and to promote to governments the college's perspectives, positions and priorities to advance the strategic priorities and elevate its profile with community and sector.


The role engages and collaborates as required with varying college departments in the review and preparation of material to support funding opportunities, meetings with government officials and community contacts, supporting communications and outreach, collecting, and managing data and preparing correspondence.


What you'll be doing:

Government Relations

  • Works collaboratively with the Director to develop a comprehensive government relations plan, e.g., vision, key initiatives, targeted relationships, framework, priorities, protocols, resources, work plans, outcomes, and indicators.
  • Establish and maintain a strong network of contacts within government, including elected and senior public service officials and their staff, to support relationship building with college executive and senior leaders.
  • Monitor and report on impacts or alignment of postsecondary education policies with provincial and national bodies such as Colleges Ontario and CICan
  • Develop working relationships and policy understandings of stakeholder groups that affect the college's interaction with municipal government
  • Provides expertise, analysis, and counsel to Director on matters and trends of government affairs, and public policy; ensures coordination and alignment for all government relations activities across Mohawk College
  • Analyze and evaluate government funding opportunities to secure new funding for College activities and infrastructure. Supporting the development of proposals and presentations for Director and College leadership to pursue with leaders in government to secure additional funding and support
  • Monitoring and tracking regional, provincial and federal election cycles and the activities of mayors, councillors and all major political parties and priorities for Hamilton Ontario.
  • Monitors, identifies, and interprets trends, opportunities, developments, and proposed legislation on matters specific to the postsecondary sector by monitoring government announcements, question period, council meetings, periodicals and other government channels.
  • Provides leadership, guidance and support in the development of key internal and external messaging that encompasses community, public and government relations with communication teams
  • Provides written reports, summaries and presentations for both internal and external use as identified by the Director
  • Public Affairs
  • Advises and collaborates with the events team in coordination of logistics of government attendees, and speaking notes; and Prepare briefs and other materials to support meetings with municipal government officials on issues/polices that relate to or will impact the college and its stakeholders.
  • Gather information and file monthly and biannual lobby registry reports (i.e., monitors government interactions across the institution and ensures alignment, coordination, and compliance with federal and provincial lobbying legislation).
Other duties as assigned.


What you'll bring to the role:


  • A minimum of three-year post-secondary education in political science, public affairs, public policy and administration, business or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 45 years of relevant, professional experience working with government or in similar government relations, community engagement, or communication and public affairs roles.
  • Experience working in Ontario's postsecondary sector with an emphasis on its public college system an asset.
  • Background knowledge of provincial, federal, and municipal governments is required.
