POSITION PURPOSE:

Our customer site located at Sherwood Park, Alberta is looking for a full-time Field Services Foreman.

This position schedules, prioritizes and conducts all aspects of inspection, testing and repair of GATX owned and non-owned railcars, while helping to maintain and foster customer relationships.

This position will assist with the managing of the Customer Site, including serving as the interim backup to the Site Manager when he or she is away from the location.

The Field Services Foreman must be proficient in and knowledgeable in all required Inspection, Repair, Air Brake Testing and Non-Destructive Testing.

The Field Services Foreman will mentor and coach railcar mechanics.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manages the day to day activities involving material inventory including but not limited to ordering, incoming inspection and staging of both Railcar and non-Railcar related items required in the execution of railcar repair.
  • Accurately completes required documentation and updates GATX, AAR and external systems directly related to repairs performed.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, GATX policies, procedures and engineering instructions, Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules, applicable Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices and DOT regulations.
  • Mentor and coach Railcar Mechanics

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE (including certifications):


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English required.
  • Background in railcar inspection and repair of all car types preferred.
  • Relevant experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting required, preferably with experience managing people and/or railcar maintenance experience.

  • Must be available to travel as needed
  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
  • Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 50 pounds from the ground surface
  • Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 100 pounds
  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments
  • Must be able to physically enter confined space (rail car manways as small as 20" in diameter) and work in enclosed environments
  • Must be able to use a variety of mediumsized hand tools
  • Must be able to routinely work near moving mechanical parts and equipment
