Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society (CVIMS) is a non-profit settlement organization located in Nanaimo, B.C, Canada. Established in 1979, CVIMS provides support to newcomers and refugees. JOB SUMMARY:

The Youth Outreach Worker for the "Connections" program will play a pivotal role in implementing a community-based initiative aimed at preventing youth engagement in gun and gang violence among individuals aged 12-25 in Nanaimo.

This program focuses on fostering healthy connections among youth, building resilience, and providing positive alternatives to violence.

The outreach worker will work closely with community organizations, schools, and stakeholders to ensure the program's success in creating a safe and nurturing environment for youth to thrive.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and maintain relationships with youth participants to create a safe and welcoming space for sharing and connecting.
  • Create opportunities to engage with atrisk youth through outreach activities to identify those who may benefit from the program.
  • Organize and facilitate group activities and discussions that encourage peertopeer support and selfexpression.
  • Develop and implement, the "Connections" program in collaboration with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Design and deliver interactive sessions and workshops that address identified risk factors and promote positive alternatives to violence.
  • Collaborate positively with local community organizations, schools, and stakeholders to align efforts and resources effectively.
  • Foster partnerships that enhance the program's impact and reach within the Nanaimo community.
  • Provide mentorship and support to help participants build resilience and make positive life choices.
  • Support youth in developing personal skills, physical literacy, and engagement in community activities.
  • Connect youth with mental health and emotional wellbeing support services as needed.
  • Provide emotional support and referrals to professionals to address the mental health needs of program participants.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the program through data collection and participant feedback.
  • Collaborate with Family Service Team Lead to make necessary adjustments and improvements.

JOB SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with youth, youth families, and community partners
  • Have the necessary skills to recognize and address cultural biases and stereotypes
  • Knowledge of traumainformed practice, antioppressive practice and cultural humility
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of community resources and services
  • Strong problem solving and decisionmaking skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Have the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work effectively in a multicultural and diverse environment including ability to recognize own biases, and how they affect interactions with others.
  • Ability to appreciate and value differences and work to create inclusive workspaces that celebrate diversity.
  • Computer and digital proficiency specific to MS Office
  • Ability to maintain accurate program records and prepare reports for senior management

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:


  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, education, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years previous experience working with youth, especially in violence prevention or empowerment programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong digital literacy skills
  • Knowledge of community resources and services
available to youth in Nanaimo.

  • Commitment to promoting a safe and nurturing environment for youth.
  • Proficiency in another language is an asset.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is a part-time position with flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required for program activities.

This position may lead to increased hours in the next two fiscal years starting April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026.

A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle may be necessary for community outreach and coordination.

Successful completion of a criminal record check is mandatory.
