The Specialist, Accounting is responsible for the delivery of all Financial Accounting and related services for the 2 Canadian Asset Servicing legal entities, the Senior Consultant, Regional Finance Canada is a key business partner in the location working with Line of Business heads and functional leads to achieve Northern Trust's business goals in the jurisdiction.

The role is an "Oversight Function" as defined in the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions' (OSFI) Supervisory Framework.


Reporting to the Canada CFO based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Specialist, Accounting is a member of the Canada Finance Team (and part of the International Finance team), supporting the delivery and oversight of all Finance functions in Canada.


The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Manages the preparation and completion of all applicable financial reports timely, accurately, and in conformity with all Canadian regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for implementing accounting policies and procedures to ensure the integrity of financial information in Canada, and for the US as required.
  • Proactively identifies accounting and reporting issues that may impact the Corporation, and oversees the research to determine the overall impact.
  • Recommends steps for resolution and communicates recommendations to management.
  • Responsible for the monthly/quarterly/annual reporting process, prepares and reviews analyses of results relative to prior year, prior month focusing on key business factors driving financial performance.
  • Coordinates the preparation of all tax related deliverables (corporate income taxes and excise taxes) to ensure returns are filed on a timely basis.
  • Develops periodic goals, organizes the work, sets shortterm priorities, monitors all activities and ensures timely completion
  • Manages special projects and ad hoc requests to support the Corporate Controller, senior group manager and upper management of the organization.
  • Operates independently; has indepth knowledge of business unit / function.

Skills /Experience

  • Qualified Accountant with expertise in financial control, reporting and IFRS.
  • Ability to provide direction and leadership to manage staff members and champion new initiatives across all lines of business.
  • Excellent analytical and evaluation skills combined with considerable attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt to various audiences.
  • Flexible approach to process changes and variable workloads.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and resolve problems before they escalate.
  • Thorough business knowledge and big picture understanding that is likely to have been gained through ten or more years of relevant accounting work experience.
