Summary of Duties


As an integral member of the ORRS team, the After Hours Clinical Manager provides exemplary leadership and decision-making in support of patient care and access to OR resources.


This role will ensure that ORRS performance objectives regarding access and flow are met while creating an environment that supports collaboration.

This position will provide on-site leadership for patient access and flow in the OR and PACU after-hours.

This will include providing oversight to clinical and non-clinical staff in order to facilitate the effective and efficient use of the Operating Room resources.

The after-hours manager will act as a clinical resource to staff in problem solving patient flow, staffing levels and bed utilization.

They will have accountability for ensuring excellence in the provision of patient centered care.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Set priorities for the evening, night or weekend shifts
  • Ensure rooms are set up for first cases of the day and there are no barriers to an on time start
  • Maintain efficient utilization of ORs after hours
  • Assume responsibility for opening or closing operating rooms as per OR policy
  • Work with the OR staff, surgical staff, anaesthesia staff and Team Leaders in PACU, SDS and SSSU to ensure uninterrupted flow of surgical activity as per current OR Policy
  • By liaising with patient flow/shift managers, maintain situational awareness related to bed access, hot spots in the organization, and other factors that might impede surgical flow after hours
  • Capture data relevant to barriers to accessing the OR after hours
  • Design and implement performance improvement strategies to enhance surgical flow after hours
  • Support the OR team as required to ensure high quality surgical care
  • Support MDRC regarding weekend and after hours requests and the delivery of loaner instruments/equipment.
Qualifications/Skills

  • A Master's Degree in Clinical/Health Sciences or Management preferred, Bachelor's Degree required
  • Current OR Management experience required.
  • Regulated Health Professional required, in good standing with associated regulatory body
  • Current certification of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • M Minimum two (2) years related OR leadership experience, preferably in a hospital supervisory/managerial capacity
  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience in an acute medical or hospital setting
  • Current B.C.L.S certification advanced clinical skills required
  • Patience, flexibility and outstanding interpersonal skills. Ability to be flexible and adapt to change in a rapidly changing work environment
  • Proven organizational, interpersonal, conflict and communication skills
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking, decision making judgment and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work effectively and demonstrates composure under pressure/ stressful conditions and to meet multiple and competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions, exercise sound judgement and use considerable initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and collaborates with others in assisting with the delivery of care to patients
  • Knowledge and familiarity with staff scheduling, workload measurement, labour relations preferred.
  • Excellent time management with demonstrated ability to coordinate numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations.
