    Duties

    Natural Resources Canada is developing a Critical Minerals Strategy for Canada, that will help advance the development of critical mineral resources and value chains. Graphite is a critical mineral with many applications. Demand for graphite is expected to grow drastically as it is a major component of batteries. Canada could become a world leader in graphite production but must overcome challenges with its purification. Natural Resources Canada is conducting R&D related to graphite purification using an electro-thermal fluidized bed. The student would develop computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models that account for heat and electrical charge transfer in a bed of electrically conductive flakes. This work would be supported by experimental test campaigns with equipment at various scales. Innovation will be inherent in tracking the movement of non-spherical particles that are subjected to Joule heating from contacting and arcing. The student will benefit from expertise and facilities at the University of Ottawa ( and CanmetENERGY in Ottawa (

    Education:
    -Currently enrolled or willing and able to enroll at the University of Ottawa in a Doctoral program with specialization relevant to the duties of the position.
    -Completion of a MASc degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering or a related field.

    Experience:
    - Experience performing computational fluid dynamics simulations.

    In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

    Experience:
    - Experience in fluid dynamics simulation of fluidized bed reactors using packages such as ANSYS CFX and OpenFOAM

    - Experience in process simulation using software packages such as Aspen or Unisim

    Knowledge:
    - Knowledge of battery material properties.
