Description

Under the direction of the Pool Supervisor, the Head Instructor Guard organizes and directs aquatic programming and lifeguarding activities at Aquatic facilities.

This includes program planning and scheduling, patron and staff safety, training and discipline, communicating with patrons and responding to emergency situations as required.

The Head Instructor Guard responds directly to complaints, prepares reports and is responsible for a range of human resource activities.


As the
_Head Instructor Guard_
you will:

  • Supervise and perform lifeguarding duties and assists in the performance of a variety of routine maintenance functions as required.
  • Administer First Aid as required.
  • Plan and supervise the programs within assigned area of responsibility and performs administrative duties related to the programs including monitoring staff qualifications and use of Active Net software.
  • Assist in the planning and/or conducting of inservice training clinics, pool testing for Aquatic Branch staff and orientation of new staff as required.
  • Assist in supervision and organization of facility program registration.
  • Supervise and train staff and volunteers which include assisting in staff scheduling and timekeeping and conducting staff performance appraisals.
  • Maintain and prepare pool records and exports data as required.
  • Conduct special aquatic courses as assigned.
  • Perform regular inspections / audits of site and ensures pool is being maintained as a safe and sanitary environment and assists in the establishment of quality and safety standards and ensures compliance with all set standards.
  • Operate within the Departmental safety policies and guidelines and ensures that all activities are conducted within these guidelines.
  • Collect user fees and handles cash as required.
  • Participate as a member of the Aquatic Branch teams in planning and the implementation of related programs and services.
  • Assess need and order program equipment, supplies and resource materials.
  • Liaise with community groups, agencies, organizations and civic staff in matters pertaining to aquatic programs and services.

Your education and qualifications include:


  • Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Swimming Pool Operation and Management Level 1 certification must be obtained within first twelve months.
  • Knowledge in specialized aquatic activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and direct staff and impart leadership skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that is applicable to the area of work.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.

Conditions of employment:


  • Must have obtained and maintained certification in:


  • National Lifeguard

  • Pool
  • Swim for Life Instructor
  • Lifesaving Instructor
  • Standard First Aid Certificate (St John Ambulance, Red Cross, Criti-Care or Aquatic Emergency Care).
  • CPR Level C / AED Certificate (St. John's Ambulance, Red Cross, Criti-Care or Aquatic Emergency Care). Renewed annually.
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
