& PURPOSE

RESPONSIBILITIES

Administration

  • Work with stakeholders, including but not limited to: Nanoose First Nation, First Nations Education Steering Committee, First Nations School Association, School Districts, Vancouver Island University, Indigenous Services Canada, and First Nations Health Authority to create working partnerships
  • Demonstrate proficiency with educational and language/cultural grants
  • Build relationships with families and peers
  • Able to work with classroom and school forms and policies. May be required to assist with policy creation
  • Provide assistance to students in the case of injury or illness; performs assigned duties during fire/earthquake/lockdown drills and other emergency situations
  • Support teaching staff and other Nanoose First Nation staff
  • Remain current in school and provincial guidelines and policies
  • Carry out other assigned comparable duties that are within the scope of knowledge and skills that are required for this job description

Teaching

  • Support assessment practices
  • Support Snaw-Nawas School with including, assisting and developing dynamic lessons that incorporate Coast Salish culture, the Snaw-NawAs people, and Hul'qumi'num language
  • Build on children's individual identified strengths by encouraging independent learning through the development of relationality
  • Help support learning by working with families to implement Independent Education Plans
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of current Child Development organizations and how they can best support our learners
  • Work with support staff for understanding needs for occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, Vancouver Island Children's Assessment Network, and other supports
  • Encourage and support independent learning while understanding each child's diverse needs
  • Facilitate the reporting of children's changing needs and recording children's behaviour and learning outcomes
  • Support students' use of educational technology and/or various assistive communication modalities as needed
  • Work with parents and guardians to help support their child's unique education plan
  • Support students in learning communication skills and social/emotional strategies with both teachers and peers
  • Help children to gain social skills while understanding the scope of children's abilities
  • Support the students understanding of their unique cultural and spiritual strengths
  • Promote cultural and spiritual learning including singing, drumming, dance, language, land, and medicines through experiential learning.

Language

  • Develop a language reclamation strategic plan in consultation with Snaw-NawAs community and Elders
  • Build capacity for the implementation of the community engagement plan
  • Consult with other Hul'q'umi'num' programs for best practices and current resources.
  • Continue developing language skills with Elders and knowledge keepers to implement Hul'q'umi'num' language into the school programming

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Education
  • BC Teacher Regulation Branch Certification
  • Minimum 10 year experience in teaching
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Strength Based and Trauma Informed Practice training
  • Ability to work with a SMART board and other related technologies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working with indigenous children in indigenous communities
  • Ability to set appropriate professional boundaries, maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality, and conflict management, demonstrate equity for all and hold themselves to a high degree of professionalism
  • Ability to develop positive rapport and relationships with community members, Elders and Snaw-NawAs First Nation staff.
  • Experience implementing and supporting the IEP goals and the classroom adaptations for the students' diverse learning
  • Ability to positively engage student in classroom activities (even if modified)
  • Knowledge of age/diverse learning social and emotional strategies
  • Knowledge of inclusion principles
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution methods in order to address students varying behaviours
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to obtain confidential and sensitive information from parents/guardians/other support staff
  • Active listening and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication and comprehension skills
  • Ability to function independently and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills; ability to work effectively under pressure an
