Description
The Economic Studies department at Desjardins consists of a team of economists and strategists. Strategists are members of Economic Studies, reporting to the Chief Economist.

Under the direction of the Head of Macro Strategy, strategists are expected to generate high-quality analysis and commentary at a sustained frequency, touching on relevant macroeconomic and financial market themes.

Although the position is primarily attached to the Foreign Exchange trading desk, the research audience includes all of Capital Markets, as well as the Desjardins Group Treasury.

The role requires close collaboration with teams from various trading desks and involves client and media exposure. The Economic Studies department is split between Montreal and Toronto.

More specifically, you will be required to:

  • Conduct research of foreign exchange markets with the goal of producing analytical notes on a regular basis and making presentations to clients.
  • Stay abreast of major developments and variables relevant to foreign exchange markets.
  • Monitor key risks and anticipate new themes.
  • Offer synthesized analysis and outline the key indicators to monitor during the session on the Foreign Exchange team's morning call.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Macro Strategy, provide hot takes to Capital Markets clients after the release of relevant data or announcements
  • Based on rigorous analysis, identify attractive risk-return trade opportunities and propose strategies to clients.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Economic Studies, and the FX Sales and Trading team
  • Travel to meet clients with sales coverage.
  • Build, manage and update chart decks for client presentations.
  • Employ, improve and develop tools to effectively analyze data.
  • Ensure accuracy of all produced research content before it's released
  • Build and strengthen ties with a variety of key market players
  • Respond to various requests for information from both outside and within the firm.

What you bring to the table- Bachelor's degree in economics or finance- A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in macroeconomic and financial research.- Academic specialization in economics or finance- Please note that other combinations of qualifications and relevant experience may be considered- Central bank, sell side, buy side or independent macroeconomic research firm experience is preferred- Trading experience will be considered- Mastery of analytical framework and theoretical underpinnings of foreign exchange markets- Advanced knowledge of the Canadian (and G10) economy- Knowledge of foreign exchange markets and market infrastructure- Strong communication skills in both French and English, both oral and written due to the nature of the duties or work tools or because the position involves interactions with bilingual-speaking partners, members and/or clients.
