Job Summary


The Occupational Health Services, Team Leader is responsible for ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and policy requirements when assessing medical fitness for duty and handling the disability management program for Canada and the United States (U.S.).

The role leads a team of Nurse Case Managers, which oversees evaluating disability and medical fitness for duty of individuals occupying safety sensitive or safety critical railway positions, non-safety-sensitive positions with physical demands as well as for other CN positions.

As an active member of a provincial Nursing Order, the incumbent is bound by professional scope of practice, continuing competencies, and ethical standards.

The incumbent is accountable for the collection and protection of highly confidential medical information regarding CN applicants, employees, former employees, and contractors.

Main Responsibilities

Leading Others

  • Act as front line for people management
  • Assign caseloads and evaluate performance of direct reports
  • Support employee development by having regular career conversations with all employees and supporting efforts to reach career goals
  • Ensure knowledge is preserved through crosstraining for key skill sets in the team
  • Communicate information, directives, policies, and procedures from Senior Management to staff
  • Approve vacation and leave of absence and ensure adequate staffing of Occupational Health Services (OHS) office at all times
Regulatory Work

  • Assess and monitor fitness to work of applicants and employees using specific indicators, criteria and in accordance with CN Policies, practices and procedures
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in CN's Drug and Alcohol (D&A) policy to monitor substance use and provide resources
  • Perform or assist with arranging preplacement, followup, random, and post incidents testing
  • Arrange assessments for employees being reinstated following dismissal and arbitration decision or after leave of absence
  • Act as a consultant to the Company on Occupational Health matters
  • Communicate appropriate information to immediate supervisor, Human Resources (HR) and Labour Relations (LR)
  • Provide medical guidance on employees' capabilities and any limitations or restrictions related to medical condition recommended for the performance of the employee's duties
  • Collaborate with the Company to ensure promotion of health and wellness and the prevention of workrelated illnesses and injuries
Support the Senior Manager, Occupational Health and Wellness

  • Participate in or lead the evaluation and implementation of process improvements in the interest of enhanced workplace safety and support of employees
  • Participate in developing training and communication materials, updating testing and assessment protocols in keeping with best practices, providing guidance to HR, LR and functions on implementation of the policy and support for arbitration
  • Participate in tracking trends in occupational health programming and services, drug and alcohol technology and processes
  • Participate in developing and implementing the wellness strategy including a mental health component
  • Act as an ancillary backup for the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) Manager in case of a critical incident
Working Conditions


The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday and may require periodic overtime.

The role requires being occasionally on-call to respond to critical incidences.

Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress.

The role requires respecting the legal obligations of a registered nurse, including confidentiality of medical information and area of practice.


Requirements:

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in disability management (e.g., occupational, or nonoccupational) or of acute nursing care (e.g., Emergency (ER), Intensive Care Unit (ICU))
Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Valid Nursing Licence
  • Member of Canadian Provincial Nursing Order
