Description:

The A&S Academic HR Office supports 29 Departments, 43 Extra-Departmental Units (EDUs), 7 Colleges, numerous Vice
- and Associate Deans, as well as administrative leadership. Within the Office, the faculty development team implements a range of programs, initiatives, and services that support faculty retention, development, and promotion across their careers.


Under the general direction of the Faculty Development Coordinator, and working closely with members of the Academic HR team and the Vice-Dean, Faculty & Academic Life, the Faculty Development Officer is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing initiatives that support professional development for faculty and academic leadership, including programs focused on onboarding of new academic leaders, orientation of new faculty, mentorship, mid-career faculty development, etc.

The incumbent is responsible for maintaining an in-depth knowledge and understanding of recent developments in faculty professional development at peer institutions.

The Faculty Development Officer will plan, design, and conduct training for senior academic leaders and administrative staff.

In consultation with Labour Relations and central colleagues, the incumbent will also develop, coordinate and/or conduct training for Colleges, Departments and EDUs to ensure the Faculty of Arts & Science is abiding by policy and collective agreements.


The incumbent will take the lead in developing multiple new faculty development initiatives and will assist in coordinating various strategic initiatives and partnerships including a multi-year new faculty onboarding program in partnership with Massey College, and the MasterCard Foundation faculty development project with partners from across the continent of Africa.

The incumbent will also undertake research and/or special projects related to Faculty and academic HR strategic priorities and central initiatives.


The Faculty Development Officer will also act as a first point of contact and system-navigator for faculty regarding a wide range of academic and non-academic inquires and concerns, and is familiar with the offices, services, and programs within the Faculty of Arts & Science and the University of Toronto.

The incumbent will develop, curate, and disseminate a collection of resources in support of faculty development.


EDUCATION:

Graduate Degree in a relevant area of study or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.


EXPERIENCE:

Minimum three years of professional experience in, and understanding of, issues related to faculty professional development. A thorough understanding of diversity frameworks is essential. Familiarity with the role of human resources and equity within the organizational structure. Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs is required. Experience working with senior Faculty leadership (including Chairs and Directors) strongly preferred. Experience in navigating international relationships, especially in the postsecondary sector, is an asset.


SKILLS:

Highly proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Internet research skills.

Must maintain a thorough understanding of issues related to EDI, intersectionality, and protected grounds as outlined in the Ontario Human Rights Code.


OTHER:

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills. Highly developed organizational and program development skills. Collaborative and team-oriented style, as well as a demonstrated ability to work independently. Ability to make appropriate connections and build synergies.

Ability to engage with various stakeholders and members of the Faculty of Arts & Science community, and to connect and build rapport with learners, faculty, and staff groups.

Ability to understand and enable diverse viewpoints and approaches. An open and creative approach to problem solving. Demonstrated experience and competence in developing and delivering training sessions to groups. Demonstrated analytical ability and ability to use initiative and strong judgment in decision-making. Ability to speak French is an asset.
