Your Opportunity

One Permanent Full Time Position.

Capital Power is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our York Energy Centre team.


As a Plant Technician you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Power Facility while assigned on shift.


You will contribute to our team by:

  • Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment in the power plant. This equipment can include the gas turbine, generators, air compressors, motors, pumps, fire suppression systems, high and medium voltage electrical equipment, instrument and control systems, extensive use of personal computers and distributed control systems, and all other balance of plant auxiliary equipment.
  • Reading meters, gauges, or automatic devices to record data such as temperature of equipment, vibration of equipment, and hours of operation to verify operating conditions.
  • Maintaining high professional, personal and equipment safety and environmental consciousness and compliance standards and practices.
  • Performing continuous improvements on the appearance of the plant facility, including: painting projects and weed control as needed.
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the entire area, including: grounds, warehouse, control room, and enclosures.
  • Utilizing the facility's computer management system to enter, review and plan work orders.
  • Performing maintenance and operations PMs as required including planning and completion of work.
  • Operating heavy equipment such as an Aerial Work Platform and/or forklift.
  • Managing contractors on-site and making arrangements for services to be performed through the CMMS and business process rules.
  • Opening and closing circuit breakers as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation.
  • Interfacing with IESO and Hydro One in the management of plant and system outages.
  • Managing tools and inventory at the site including computer systems and maintenance tools.
  • Identifying and resolving CEMS issues.
  • Keeping Manager, and peers, fully informed of unusual plant conditions and current job progress as the job relates to facility operations when assigned on-shift.
  • Maintaining all safety and environmental monitoring equipment compliant the regulatory requirements.
  • Complying with safety regulations and environmental rules to ensure the safety amongst employees, contractors, and the public.
  • Performing a Watch inspection on each system in the plant.

This includes:

recording data, observing operations of equipment by looking for abnormalities such as smells, leaks, or sounds indicating probable issues.- Assisting in identifying and performing the root cause of system failures.- Completing 'Lock-out Tag-out', 'Confined Space', and other permits required to perform work on or inspect plant equipment.- Performing hazard identification and mitigation for maintenance work performed by self, plant peers, and/or contractors on site.- Coordinating purchasing with the appropriate personnel and vendors to achieve timely delivery of materials and repair of plant equipment.- Maintaining strong relationship with Manager in handling the plant's inventory, and performing audits as needed.- Willing to work independently most of the time but can effectively work in a team environment when needed.


What you will bring to the role:

Education:


  • Completed High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Any one of the following Journeyman trade tickets: Electrical, Industrial Construction & Engineering (IC&E), Steamfitter, Mechanical, Millwright, Industrial Controls technologist / technician.
  • Power Engineer 3rd Class or higher will be considered if accompanied with significant maintenance experience.

Skills and Experience:

  • 35 years of experience in operating and/or maintaining of a plant (preferably a combined or simple cycle power plant). Demonstrates extensive knowledge of all parts of the power plant operations.
