Supervisor, Station Sustainment

Position Purpose:


The Supervisor, Substations leads the execution of Station construction and maintenance activities to ensure Alectra substations operate in a safe and reliable manner.

This role provides leadership to field and support staff engaged in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of transformer stations, municipal substations, and stations assets.


Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:


Technical Leadership

  • Provides required leadership and guidance to employees and contractors engaged in the installation, operation, and maintenance of substation facilities and equipment
  • Plans, organizes and supervises daily activities of operational unit, including emergency response as required
  • Conducts or supports investigations into operational events or failures to determine root causes and to develop solutions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Assists with developing and administering maintenance programs for substation facilities and equipment
  • Develops long and shortterm inspection and preventative maintenance schedules for substations and equipment
  • Provides coaching, development, performance management, technical guidance and advice
  • Leads and/or participates in department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget
  • Researches, recommends and implements new or enhanced policies, procedures and processes to improve operational effectiveness
  • Provides input into department goals and objectives

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Coordinates periodic data collection efforts for station equipment to provide prescribed information for the Asset Condition Assessment model for station equipment
  • Ensures compliance with legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards

Relationship Management

  • Coordinates substation services activities with those of other departments, contractors, agencies and customers
  • Responds to customer inquiries

Resource Management

  • Creates databases to track substation asset maintenance history
  • Ensures an adequate level of spare equipment parts is maintained and on hand for emergency purposes
  • Schedules, assigns, and tracks work to ensure completion on time and within budget
  • Participates in On-Call rotation if required

Safety Leadership

  • Support and promote the corporate safety culture
  • Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with applicable Alectra procedures and applicable regulations, such as OHSA, the Utility Work Protection Code, and Electrical Safety Rules
  • Ensures all safety audits, work observations are completed and all incidents are investigated in a timely fashion

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:


Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree or College diploma related to Electrical Engineering or recognized equivalent
  • Registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) in good standing (preferred)
  • Certified in the Utility Work Protection Code
  • In depth knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe work practices and procedures, including Electrical Utility safety rules
  • Knowledge of various electrical equipment test processes
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems and substations with an understanding of engineering drawings
  • Knowledge of regulatory and governmental requirements (OEB Rules and Regulations, PIPEDA, Electrical Safety Rules and OHSA)

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of substation experience in electrical distribution
  • Experience in substation maintenance, substation engineering, and protection and control systems and commissioning/testing procedures
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Strong ability to lead change and engage, develop and motivate teams
  • Strong problemsolving skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions
  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to convey information accurately and concisely
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
  • Strong conflict negotiation skills, with the ability to influence and resolve difficult situations
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class G driver's license
