Natural Resource Information & Digital Services (NRIDS) is the information management/information technology (IM/IT) service provider and organizational partner to the Natural Resource Ministries (NRM).

As the centralized authority for all information, geospatial data, and technology across the NRM, NRIDS is leading the transformation and modernization of business practices through new and innovative technology solutions, continuous improvement projects and operational IM/IT solutions.


The Provincial Species Habitat Modelling Specialist is the lead provincial authority on species habitat modelling and will be part of a team that works to improve the state of knowledge and conservation of species and ecosystems in BC.

The position develops and provides expert advice, standards, and spatial data products relating to species habitat modelling.

The Provincial Species Habitat Modelling Specialist will work with botanists, zoologists, ecologists, and data managers in the BC CDC and in the NRMs, as well as contractors and other partners in the province.

The position reports to the BC CDC Manager.

Job Requirements:


Post-graduate degree in a related field and one year related experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of related experience.


Related education fields include:
Biology, Ecology, Geography, Data Science, Computer Science, GIS, Geomatics, Statistics, Physics, or Mathematics.


Related experience must include:

  • Experience using R.
  • Experience using predictive modelling methods.
  • Experience performing advanced statistical analysis (e.g., Bayesian statistics, nonlinear, hierarchical, mixed effects, and/or multivariate models).
  • Experience working with spatial data and performing complex geospatial analyses using GIS.
Preference may be given to those with one or more of the following:

  • Experience writing scripts using version-control software such as GitHub.
  • Experience with Random Forest, MAXENT, or other applicable data science algorithms used in ecological modelling.
  • Experience with biological or ecological data analysis.
  • Experience identifying species habitat requirements and life history characteristics.
  • Experience writing technical reports.
  • Experience in sampling and research trial design, statistics, and survey methodology.
  • Experience with project management and supervising teams.

About this Position:

This is for a temporary opportunity until March 31, 2025. A permanent opportunity may result from this temporary appointment.
This position can be based in any Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship office.

Some of the locations available are Victoria, Prince George, Kamloops, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Surrey, Kelowna, Chilliwack, Campbell River, Fort Nelson, Nelson, Smithers and Williams Lake.
