Position Responsibilities


The ASP Coordinator assists the Aquatics Program Manager in the coordination and delivery of all Aquatic Specialty Programs and services for the _YMCA of Northern Alberta HFA Facilities_.

The Aquatics Coordinator will monitor and respond to programming, ensuring the (ASP) Instructors are all working on strategies to improve the members experience; affecting retention increase, program quality, member satisfaction and maintain a good standing with _The Lifesaving Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories_.

The ASP Coordinator is directly accountable to the Aquatics Program Manager.

The ASP Coordinator is also accountable to the Aquatic Specialty (ASP) Instructors as a whole, members, volunteers and the public for successful delivery of quality programs and services.

The ASP Coordinator will also be working and communicating with, our partner, The Lifesaving Society.

  • Assist the Aquatics Program Manager in:
  • Recruitment, training, coaching of ASP Instructors.
  • Ensure ASP instructors develop SMART goals within first month of performance.
  • Performance, management, evaluation and recognition of ASP instructors.
  • Maintain instructor availability, scheduling and electronic time capture systems.
  • Ensure that ASP instructors are trained and certified.
  • Tracking Budget
  • Create, monitor, schedule and implement ASP programming for members.
  • Manage pool programming space, assign ASP instructors to their designated areas, and maintain proper program ratios.
  • Monitor and respond to program quality and the member experience (program audits, member feedback, comment cards, and conversations with members).
  • Instructors are trained in the HFA centre's emergency response system and procedures including fire evacuation, missing child and emergency first aid situations.
  • Member etiquette is monitored and reinforced by YMCA ASP instructor.
  • Take necessary action.
  • Ensure that instructors inspect and monitor equipment for safety and complete any maintenance and cleaning checklist duties.
  • Maintenance issues are reported and added to the task list
  • Enforce rules and policies from the HFA centre's program procedures & guideline manuals and all other Association wide policy manuals.
  • Assist YMCA Experience Associates when needed to ensure appropriate fees are collected from all members
  • Track aquatic centre statistics
  • Weekly tracking of class attendance
  • Collect budget data for Aquatics Program Manager
  • Administer payroll for ASP Instructors
  • Process ASP Instructor Rosters and submission to the Lifesaving Society
  • Creation of Annual Competitors Analysis
  • Contribute as a member of the staff team in the operation of the home branch, and complete other duties as assigned.
  • Support current campaigns and relationship development.
  • Demonstrate and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, and values and the YMCA programs and services.

What You'll Need for This Job

  • University Degree in Recreation, Physical Education or Education, or related experience an asset.
  • Child Welfare & Police Security Clearance.
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) an asset.
  • WHMIS Certification.
  • National Lifeguard (NL)
  • YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), or Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI)
  • Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) or Standard First Aid (SFA)
  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
  • National Lifeguard Instructor
  • First Aid Instructor
  • Lifesaving Society Trainer (an asset)
  • Oxygen Administration (an asset)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in aquatics in an instructing and/or guarding capacity.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in teaching Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, or CPR/AED or higher.
  • Leadership experiences an asset.
