Staff at Rookie League participate in dynamic training, receive on-the-ground coaching and are celebrated for their hard work and meaningful impact on the lives of children living in Toronto Community Housing.


The program includes a wide range of recreation, arts, sports and team-building activities as well as a strong focus on baseball skill instruction.

The program is designed to help campers develop valuable life skills while increasing their self-esteem.

Junior Program Leaders are relatively new to their roles as camp counsellors. Their number one goal is to ensure that campers are having the most fun and memorable camp experience.

Junior Program Leaders play a vital role in making Rookie League the best camp experience by, being a reliable role-model as they lead their camp group through planned activities.

They work hard to create a safe and inclusive environment which fosters positive camper behavior while encouraging camper participation.

1-2 Junior Program Leaders work with the two Senior Program Leaders at each site to manage up to 30 campers aged 6 to 12 years old.


Program Timelines:


  • Training dates: Monday, June 12th
  • Thursday, June 30th (9:00am 5:00pm)
  • Camp dates: Tuesday, July 4th to Friday, August 18th (8:45am 4:15pm)

What you'll do

  • Develop, plan and implement a variety of social and recreational activities which meet the needs of the community
  • Promote all programs and activities on an ongoing basis
  • Conduct ongoing inventory and inform the Senior Program Leader of supplies needed during the program
  • Attend all staff meetings, local and city wide events as directed by Supervisor
  • Wear the official staff uniform and nametag while on duty
  • Ensure that a final program report is completed at the end of the Program and that all forms and supplies are handed in
  • Reports and documents any problems, incidents or unusual occurrences to Supervisor in a timely manner

What you'll need

  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience and/or academic background in working with children and youth in a community based setting
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively
  • Administrative skills would be an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program planning
  • First Aid qualifications (minimum of Emergency First Aid) is an asset, or must be willing to obtain certificate prior to assignment
  • Must be 14 years of age or older

Here is what a typical day in the role of a Junior Program Leader looks like. It seems like a lot but we know you are up for it

  • Attend two weeks of staff training
  • Be respectful, opento, and receptive of coaching and mentoring from Senior Program Leaders and RCS Program Coordinators
  • Arrive each day on time (8:45am) and leave after the debrief at the end of each day (4:15pm)
  • Participate in endofday debriefs each day
  • Be responsible for the assigned group of children in their care each week (89 campers). This includes regular headcounts, morning checkins, and teamleading for a variety of events.
  • Plan and be prepared to lead specific activities each day as assigned during training.
  • Ensure that the activities you lead are outcomebased and reflect a quality of programming that is aligned with TCHC standards

  • Maintain a cooperative relationship with other programs and agencies within the community
  • Ensure the recreation program operates safely and in compliance with TCHC policies, procedures and TCHC Handbook
  • Take on preassigned specific leadership roles in weekly Big Sport Day Challenge activities
  • Promote and foster an environment of inclusion and teamwork between campers and staff
  • Encourage campers to participate in activities while participating in them yourself as well
  • Ensure that the program space is clean and wellcared for each day
  • Other duties as assigned
