Support Staff Part-time Casual Positions


We are looking for qualified individuals to join the School of Health & Life Sciences in the role of Practice Application Specialist (PAS) within the PSW & Supportive Care programs.

The PAS plays an important role in supporting the integration of theoretical knowledge into practice.


The incumbent will regularly work up to 24 hours per week and may be scheduled for 12-hour shifts, Monday to Friday between the hours of 6:00am-7:00pm.


Responsibilities:


  • Organizes the preparation and scheduling of curricular, skillfocused, experiential learning activities for students and demonstrates and assesses psychomotor skills and decisionmaking ability in the lab/practicum environment
  • Assesses student performance in the lab/practicum environment in relation to course outcomes and program standards using predetermined calibration tools
  • Provides additional assistance to students for skill development as required and determined by the Teaching & Learning team
  • Documents observations as required and consults with Teaching & Learning team regarding students' ability to meet established standards/outcomes
  • Organizes for effective delivery of skills demonstration, using the predetermined criteria available in the programs
  • Modifies experiential learning activities as required to observe students' ability to demonstrate practice capability and decision making, in accordance with program outcomes and the associated professional regulatory bodies
  • Schedules individual and group activities (including remedial work appointments) as required
  • Models and demonstrates professional practices and conducts assessment of skills via return demonstrations, for individuals or groups of students
  • Provides documentation regarding student progress
  • Records the progress of the students' skill mastery using predetermined assessment tools
  • Maintains student files for use by the Teaching & Learning team as required
  • Completes environmental preparation and cleanup as required
  • Ensures continuous maintenance and cleanliness of the lab environment is performed daily
  • Ensures lab equipment is in good working order
  • Supervises students in practicum settings which includes ongoing contact with field placement location, liaising with agency staff to promote student learning, observing students in placement setting, meeting with preceptor and/or student, assisting with problem solving, providing verbal and written feedback to students, completing paperwork and maintaining individual student files, reviewing midterm and final preceptor evaluations as required, providing input to teaching/learning team faculty regarding final grades\based on preestablished criteria, referring students requiring additional support to teaching/learning team faculty
  • Proctors examinations as required
  • Remains aware of changing clinical practice and consults with agency staff
  • Attends frequent Teaching & Learning team meetings throughout the semester
  • Promotes good public relations through contacts with personnel from other educational facilities and health care agencies

Qualifications:


  • Three years of recent nursing experience in medicine, surgery, or longterm care in an active healthcare environment
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills in working with faculty teams, students, and others
  • High level organizational skills for implementation of activities for students
  • Selfmotivated and creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong computer skills and willingness to remain current with advancing computer technology
  • Maintain College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards of Nursing Practice, updating skills as required
