If you answered yes, our Pinawa, Manitoba location is looking for a
Decommissioning Specialist.

The Decommissioning Specialist will design, construct, operate and maintain experimental apparatus to perform experiments related to fuel and fission product behaviour under accident conditions and during fuel oxidation, and to facilitate chemical operations related to those experiments.

Work supports the current CANDU fleet, Small Modular Reactor deployment, the Canadian Federal Family and the stabilization of research reactor fuels for waste management.

CNL Employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures).

Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.


What will you be doing?

  • Contributing to the design and construction of electrical and/or mechanical apparatus, facilities, and related instrumentation
  • Installing and setting up instruments (e.g., thermocouples, pressure transducers, liquid and gas flow meters) as needed for experiments.
  • Maintaining instruments (e.g., flow meters, data acquisition systems) in a calibrated state.
  • Assisting in preparation of design drawings (e.g., mechanical wiring/circuit diagrams, instrument schematics, experimental apparatus designs, specification documents).
  • Performing work with hazardous materials and gases, and radioactive materials with appropriate safety measures in place.
  • Interacting closely and proactively with fellow lab staff and professional staff to advance team projects.
  • Representing particular projects requiring interactions with engineering or trades groups.
  • Participating in writing and reviewing of procedural documents.
  • Procuring materials and equipment, as required.
  • Assisting in the development of laboratory procedures and work plans.
  • Coordinating with Engineering on design change processes.
  • Proficient in the rules and regulations (e.g., JHA and RWA/RLP) for the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation of the Fission Product Behaviour laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:


  • Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security".
  • Graduation from an Institute of Advanced Technology in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Technology or equivalent formal education.
Minimum of two years of relevant experience in the following areas;

  • Construction, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment (including instrumentation).
  • Operation, construction of gas flow systems.
  • Operation or construction of data acquisition systems.
  • Operation of furnaces and temperature controllers.
  • Working with electrical safety.
  • Experienced in a radiation environment along with hazardous materials and gases.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical or electronic aptitude.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
  • Good organizational skills and initiative.
  • Familiarity with piping system and electrical system diagrams and components.
  • Operations under a Radiological Work Procedure or Radioisotope Laboratory Protocol.
  • Familiarity with CNL policies, processes and procedures relating to a laboratory environment.

Working Conditions:


  • The work is generally in a laboratory environment with some hazardous conditions (radiation sources, fissionable materials, electrical power supplies, high temperature fluids and surfaces, hazardous gases and chemicals).
  • Handling of lead (in compliance with laboratory safety guidelines) will be required. The employee has access to personal protective equipment and to extensive training to understand the hazards.
  • The employee may occasionally work overtime or irregular hours, particularly during hotcell experiments.
