Position Purpose
To ensure the safety of elementary school children when crossing streets to and from the school, usually during peak volume of traffic.

Minimum Qualifications
Police Vulnerable Sector Check; ability to work independently, with mínimal supervision; dependability to arrive on time to ensure the safety of the children when crossing the street; ability to work outside during all weather conditions; physically/medically fit to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
Part-Time Crossing Guard
PRIMARY FUNCTION
To ensure the safety of elementary school children when crossing streets to and from the school, usually during peak volume of traffic.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Manager of Municipal Law Enforcement
DIRECTION EXERCISED
None
WORKING PROCEDURES
Arrives at the school crossing approximately one-half hour before the starting time, during the full lunch period and remains at the crossing for one half hour after school is finished to ensure all students cross the streets safely;
Uses the three whistles method of crossing children safely across the street:
- 1st whistle to alert traffic to come to a stop so you may enter the roadway
- 2nd whistle to maintain the stopped traffic and escort children safely across the street
- 3rd whistle to alert traffic that you have completed the crossing and left the road so that the traffic may continue
Reports incidents involving vehicles to police and supervisor, as necessary and prepares incident reports as required;
Notifies the school of situations regarding students as deemed necessary;
Advises supervisory promptly of any hazardous conditions affecting the work location and/or the safety of the children;
Responsible for becoming familiar with and following the guidelines of the School Crossing Guard Manual.

SKILL/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Must submit a Police Vulnerable Sector Check;
Ability to work independently, with mínimal supervision;
Dependability to arrive on time to ensure the safety of the children when crossing the street;
Ability to work outside during all weather conditions;
Physically/medically fit to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time;
One to three months period of adjustment, orientation and adaptation on the job.
