This position will be housed out of the Sherwood Park Campus, but the candidate may be asked to travel to Fort Saskatchewan and Vegreville sites as required. Extensive experience dealing with at-risk students and families required. Experience working with First Nations, Metis and Inuit self-identified students and families an asset. Experience and background supporting an inclusive LGBTQ+ environment required. Sound understanding of graduation requirements and high school programming an asset.
Commencing August 20, 2024 to June 26, 2025
35 hours per week (Monday to Friday - 7 hours per day)

Next Step Sherwood Park provides flexible, outreach programming for grades 7 to 12 students with eight teaching staff and four support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB.
Next Step is a supportive, alternative school for students who require a non-traditional, individualized program. Located in community-based sites in Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan and Vegreville, Next Step provides students with:
a safe, comfortable environment;
flexible, individual schedules;
the opportunity to take responsibility for their own education and to experience success; and
excellent teachers and encouraging and respectful staff.
The Success Coach's primary role at Next Step is to maximize school engagement, increase academic success and enhance social, emotional and physical well-being for junior high and senior senior high students. The success coach will facilitate connections between family, school and community agencies. They work as part of a multidisciplinary team to enhance service delivery by helping students set goals, plan strategies and arrange resources that will help students be successful in school and in the community. Success Coaches consult with teachers, counsellors and administration as to Student needs and progress. They demonstrate leadership in establishing an inclusive learning community. The Success Coach also provides FNMI support services for the school's students, families and staff. The Success Coach offers support services in a variety of formats (individuals and/or groups) and in a variety of settings (school and community settings).
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Support
Establish trusting and meaningful relationships with students
Provide assistance in all curriculum areas; one on one or in small groups as directed by the instructional team
Participate in the assessment of students emotional/behavioural and social needs
Through goal setting and informal coaching, assist individuals and small groups of students in the areas of wellness, personal resiliency.
Assist in planning and implementing strategies to address student needs (planned daily activities, providing information, making referrals, recreational/skill development activities or workshops)
Help youth identify personal strengths and resources for positive change
Participate in case conferences, Professional Development opportunities, team meetings and ongoing supervision from project coordinator.
Monitor full time student attendance and progression in course completion
Advocate for students within the school and community
Community/Family Support
Promote a closer link among school, family and community
Collaborate with school staff, and other community partners to build a circle of support for participating students and school staff.
Provide parent workshops as needed
Act as a resource for families as needed (provide information, facilitate referrals to community agencies)
Support families and caregivers in their efforts to get their youth to attend school and succeed academically and socially.
Enhance communication among family, school and community service providers
Foster community partnerships that advance the outcomes identified for the project.
School Support
Share at risk student research and strategies with school staff.
Support students participating in school activities such as field trips, cooking in our kitchen, facilitating food programs, homework clubs, extracurricular activities and special events.
Consult with teachers, counsellors and administration as to students' needs and progress
Provide consultation for school personnel regarding student social and emotional concerns/development
Organize school/community FNMI cultural activities
Participate in IPP development/implementation as required
Communication
Consult with teachers, counsellors and school administration
Communicate with community agencies
Maintain written records of services provided/case notes
Collect data and contact information
Community Agency Involvement
Build and maintain connections with community agencies in order to facilitate referrals and access to services
Participate in collaborative projects as directed by the supervisor
Promote awareness of community agencies and their services
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education
Minimum of a diploma in a Social Work/Psychology/Counseling/Child and Youth Care or related field.
Courses or training in Attention Deficit Disorder, Behavior Management, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
Experience
The Success Coach should have a minimum of 1 year of related experience in the human service field.
Experience in a school setting is an asset
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Understanding of FNMI youth culture, belief in strength based, solution focused approach
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to work collaboratively with youth and families as well as with school and community agency staff. Flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and imagination
Ability to work as part of a multi-agency team while being self directed and possess initiative.
Ability to work with minimal supervision with defined responsibilities.
Willingness to obtain First Aid/CPR certificate within 6 months of employment
Strong computer literacy including telecollaborative skills.
Knowledge and experience in developing and delivering skill building workshops, presentations and effective programming
