Donor Relations and Leadership Giving Officer:

Primary Purpose:

To build engagement and affinity in support of the College of Engineering and institutional strategic fundraising goals by planning, developing, managing and implementing comprehensive advancement programs focused on stewardship and recognition of College of Engineering donors.


Nature of Work:

As a member of the College of Engineering External Relations Team, the Donor Relations and Leadership Giving Officer reports to the Associate Vice-President Advancement and Chief Development Officer.

This position will work closely with staff within the University Relations portfolio, and administrative offices within the College of Engineering.

This position builds and maintains collaborative professional relationships with a cross-section of faculty, staff, alumni, prospects/donors, students, volunteers, University Relations professionals and other stakeholders to meet stated objectives.


The work requires a proactive approach in a complex environment and the ability to communicate effectively to a diverse audience through a variety of methods and communication mediums.

Establishing and maintaining positive relationships and modeling best practices are essential to success.

The donor relations and leadership giving officer makes discretionary decisions and uses judgment to determine appropriate procedures in alignment with legislative requirements and institutional policies.

Accuracy and attention to detail are essential to ensure information provided to others is correct, as the consequence of errors is high.

The environment is dynamic and fast-paced. Consequence of error is significant to the reputation and profile of the College and the university. Some travel and irregular hours should be expected in carrying out specific assignments.


University Relations is responsible for institutional advancement programs (which include Fundraising, Alumni Engagement and Operations and Services), and as such is dedicated to supporting the related needs of all colleges, units and the university as a whole.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:


  • Effectively
    build and maintain collaborative relationships with the college's donors, ensuring the appropriate tone and interest is projected and appropriately solving or referring concerns as they arise;
  • Implementing donor relations and fundraising tactics for all levels of donors in an effort to increase giving to the college and the university, notably for active fundraising projects such as the new building initiative;
  • Providing support to college leaders, faculty, and staff in their donor related activities such as the development of briefing notes and arranging meetings;
  • Developing proposals, reports, letters and other fundraising materials to share with donors.

Functions of the Role:

Donor Relations (30%): Develop, implement, and maintain appropriate acknowledgement, recognition, reporting and engagement practices for all levels of relationships by:

  • Following best practices in donor relations to ensure accurate, timely and personal gift acknowledgements, donor recognition initiatives, and meaningful stewardship and engagement opportunities;
  • Adhering to policies and procedures that must be considered before accepting gifts, and ensure gifts are employed as donors intend;
  • Establishing and implementing a stewardship pyramid to outline levels for acknowledgements;
  • In conjunction with college leadership, developing recognition structures for giving opportunities, including gift levels required for gift announcements, establishing endowed funds, named spaces, donor walls, etc.
  • Coordinating and managing donor recognition events such as the Evening of Appreciation, plaque unveils, and gift announcements;
