HOURS OF WORK: 8 HOUR SHIFTS; HOURS WILL BE SCHEDULED TO COVER ALL SHIFTS AND DAYS OF THE WEEKs

JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) in Histology is responsible for receiving and accessioning specimens for Histology and Cytology, filing and retrieving of blocks and slides, labeling of cassettes and slides, discarding of specimens, maintaining supply stock in the gross dissection room, and Operating Room areas as well as assisting the Histology & Cytology technologists with cover slipping and sorting of slides for distribution to the pathologist.

Additional duties include maintenance of the tissue processors, automated stainers and cover slippers and preparation and staining of Cytology specimens.

Rotation with other technical assistant positions in the department may be required to support daily workload demands. Data entry using the Hospital's CoPath Pathology and Cerner Requisitioning Systems is an asset. Exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials frequently, with appropriate personal protective equipment, occurs in this position. This position will include rotations at the St. Mary's Hospital location. Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Other responsibilities included but not limited to:

Supporting the operation of automated Immunohistochemistry and Special Stains instruments with preparation and loading/unloading of histochemical reagents, loading/removal of completed tests, and routine maintenance.
Delivery and verification of completed microscope slides to the Pathologist team.
Review of outstanding logs for investigation of pending cases.
Washing of glassware
Inventory receipt, documentation, and distribution using KANBAN system
Pulling blocks requested by Pathologists and Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) for processing.
Supporting MLT daily operations by organizing and preparing workload.
Liaising with Clerical team for referred out testing facilitation.
Supporting the operation and workflow of embedding and microtome instrumentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Grade 12 or equivalent required
Recent Histology and Cytology experience will be considered an asset and will be given first consideration
Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Assistant Program required
Certification from CSMLS and/or MLPAO is preferred
Member of the CMLTO Voluntary Roster of Registered Medical Laboratory Technicians is preferred
Good organizational and interpersonal skills
Ability to perform effectively under mínimal supervision
Must be meticulous in performing repetitive tasks including opening and closing 200 specimen containers/day
Regular lifting of bulk supplies and heavy specimens (Must be able to lift 25 lbs)
Computer and typing skills as well as good filing skills (numbers) Good attendance record
