Position Summary:


As an Outreach Specialist, you will work with Discovery Centre's Science Education team to deliver engaging activities and exhibit experiences at public events across Nova Scotia.

You have a passion for sharing your knowledge and inspiring youth, and the communication skills needed to make science accessible to all audiences.


The Outreach Specialist is responsible for the timely setup and delivery of the travelling Winter of Discovery outreach program, liaising directly with Discovery Centre team members and community event organizers.

The role will also be responsible for working with Science Educators to deliver fun activities in a day camp setting in rural Nova Scotia for youth ages 8-14 in March.

Regular overnight travel and weekend work will be required, and a Discovery Centre vehicle, accommodations, and per diems will be provided.


Relationships & Significant Contacts:

The Outreach Specialist reports to Discovery Centre's Coordinator of Science Education and Director, Science Education.

Working in a team environment, the Outreach Specialist is required to communicate with various program partners and stakeholders, community organizers, students, event participants, and the media.


Description of Tasks:


  • The Outreach Specialist works with our Science Education department to:
  • Set up and deliver engaging experiences to outreach event and camp participants
  • Coordinate outreach logistics, including necessary accommodations
  • Maintain and purchase materials and supplies as needed
  • Organize related receipts and compile program reports
  • Coordinate/purchase supplies, working within the program budget
  • Prepare summary reports on each camp week and a final report on the program
  • Liaise with parents or guardians to ensure campers needs are met
  • Assist, as needed, with promotional activities

Qualifications:


  • Dynamic presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in science.
  • Highly organized.
  • Demonstrated reliability and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience working with youth in an educational or recreational setting considered a strong asset.
  • Bilingual (English/French) preferred.
  • First Aid Certification is an asset.
  • Must pass a criminal record check or vulnerable sector check.
  • A valid driver's license and availability for overnight travel on a weekly basis is necessary.
