The Clinical Research Program at St. Joseph's Health Centre is looking for a Research Assistant I.

In this position, the individual will support clinical research trials in various departments, including but not limited to Surgery, Orthopaedics, Critical Care Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, and Nephrology.

This position provides administrative and clinical support to the senior research coordinator/manager.

Clinical tasks may include the screening of potential study participants, assisting in patient recruitment, following up with study patients as per the study protocol, data collection and entries into the electronic data capture (EDC), and labelling, shipping samples and study-related material (if applicable), Administrative tasks may include, preparation of documents for ethics board (Unity Health Toronto REB or Clinical Trials Ontario IRB) submissions, filing study related documents including regulatory, screening and training logs, certificates, and study participants' charts.

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated, and independent person to fulfill this role.

This person should be willing to work flexible hours as start and end times may vary due to when the patients are available, and procedures are performed.

This is an entry-level role with potential progression to level II and Research Coordinator.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Performing general office duties e.g. filing, faxing, mailings, courier services, photocopying, etc.
  • Ordering supplies and maintaining inventory.
  • Organizing office space.
  • Interacting with hospital departments such as pharmacy, various laboratories, wards, etc. and with internal and external stakeholders in order to provide administrative support.
  • Collecting transcriptions and entry of study related data into the Electronic Data Capture.
  • Recruitment and Coordination of Study Participants:
  • Screens participants and obtains required documentation including obtaining consent.
  • Collects data via phone calls, interviews.
  • Recruits study participants
  • Follows protocolbased procedures

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Undergraduate Degree or 1 year of relevant experience OR demonstrable equivalent combination of specialized education and experience preferred
  • Proficient computer skills, particularly database or EDC, spreadsheet and word processing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and scientific terminology
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills are necessary
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
  • TCPS CORE 2 certificate of training (Completed within first 2 weeks of hire)
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate (Completed within first 2 weeks of hire)
  • Intermediate Organizational and time management skills, including multitasking and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.

Performs cross-functional and other duties as assigned and/or requested.
