Description

Under the direction of the Manager, Library User Services, the incumbent provides a broad range of information services to the students, staff and faculty.

The incumbent provides reference and library use guidance and is also required to support the circulation desk as needed.

The incumbent also helps to provide academic integrity remediation sessions to students in conjunction with the Tutoring Centre and supports Sheridan's Open Education Resources (OER) initiatives.


What You'll be Doing

  • Providing reference service and guidance to the Library users by interpreting their needs through a reference interview;
  • Demonstrating the use of the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and library indexes to locate relevant information.
  • Recommending appropriate electronic database(s) and guiding users in basic search skills.
  • Drawing upon own knowledge of collection for information not accessible through standard tools or referring to external sources of information (other libraries, agencies, and companies).
  • Assisting students with printer setups and basic technical skills.
  • Reporting more complex hardware and software problems to Information Technology Helpdesk for service calls;
  • Working with other library staff to maintain a suitable library environment by reminding users of library policies and enforcing the policies as necessary.
  • Charging and discharging materials, registering borrowers and collecting fines for overdue materials using the automated library system (ALMA).
  • Shelving returned materials and shelfreading collection when required.
  • Delivers academic remediation sessions to students with academic integrity infractions to discuss issues related to academic integrity, plagiarism and proper citation of sources and post appointment update statistics and Sheridan Student Information System (Peoplesoft).
  • Provides citation support by appointment in Tutor Ocean to students with questions about different citation styles (e.g APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
  • Oversees maintenance of OER LibGuide by checking links and making suggestions for content to include in LibGuides
  • Supports the Copyright and OER Librarian in the discovery, creation, dissemination, identification, adoption and assessment of high quality open education resources.
  • Upon request, will participate in the OER creation and edition process, such as facilitation proofreading, responding to faculty questions about OER technology, sourcing supplemental materials such as copyright cleared images.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • A minimum of a 2year Library Technician diploma, Library Science diploma or a related field with at least 2 years of practical experience in an automated library environment, including experience with online searching, research databases and circulation software (i.e. ALMA) (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of academic integrity, plagiarism and citation.
  • Must have an understanding of online citation tools (i.e. RefWorks).
  • Experience working with a culturally diverse clientele and/or TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certification is considered an asset.
