Our Total Care Education provides services that can support international students to meet their Academic, Social, Emotional and Physical needs.


The Health and Safety Officer will promote health and safety programs and initiatives by supporting the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and Management throughout Columbia International College and Bark Lake Conference and Leadership Center.


This position provides all JHSC and management with health and safety updates, administrative support, and project and action plan coordination.


Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for administrative functions such as budget preparation for Health and Safety, preparation of various forms, reports and documents.
  • Coordinate health and safety projects with relevant stakeholders and process groups from initiation to completion.
  • Actively attends and schedules all JHSC meetings, records notes, action plans and circulates all documentation to the stakeholders; i.e. building inspections, incident reports, hazard reports, etc.
  • Prepare drafts of health and safety policies and processes in conjunction with the JHSC and various managers and other stakeholders within the organization.
  • Prepare and facilitates ongoing health and safety training including first aid, ensures and tracks all JHSC training, recertification, etc.
  • Coordinate workplace inspections and take appropriate action to ensure compliance.
  • Investigate accidents and injuries that occur in the workplace; conducts risk assessments (Reviewing all incident reports, compiling and analyzing monthly statistics).
  • Responsible for the establishment of workplace safety and health committees, and monitor their performance.
  • Assist in the training and/or supervision of new JHSC members in responsibilities, workplace inspection procedures and programs.
  • Disseminate regular health and safety information to staff and students.
  • Conduct ongoing health and safety training assessment for each department, and ensure compliance.
  • Research and write policies, procedures and reports related to Health and Safety and provide appropriate training (e.g. Fire Planning, Disaster Plan, Evacuation, Crisis Prevention, Infection Control, PPE Policy, Ladder Safety, etc.) in cooperation with the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Act as CIC's liaison with the Ministry of Labor inspector and ensuring completion of all orders issued and update all relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders for the correct disposal of hazardous materials and waste.
  • Monitor and confirm that MSDS and SDS sheets are up to date and complete following all monthly inspections.
  • Act as the point of contact for employees to request personal protective equipment (PPE), assess PPE requirements as needed and coordinates with purchasing to order.
  • Monitor the weather and be a part of the decision process on determining snow days.
  • Work closely with the residence team on safety awareness regarding fire alarms and student's awareness towards safety (including courses).
  • Ensure ice/snow removal is complete from sidewalks, etc.
  • Monitor renovation projects from a safety point of view.
  • Ensure company and departmental standards are met and policies are carried out.
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:


  • Postsecondary diploma/degree in business administration or related discipline is strongly preferred; education and/or courses in Health and Safety are an asset.


  • Intermediate

  • Advanced skill level in MS Office Suite (specifically Excel, Word) is required.
  • Strong communication skills, providing status updates with multiple stakeholders.
  • JHSC Level I, II, CPR/AED-C, WHMIS 2015 (transition between MSDS and SDS, GHS)
  • Positive attitude leveraging their initiative to approach situations proactively.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, juggle competing tasks and work efficiently against deadlines.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and move quickly between tasks in an organized manner.
  • Attention to detail in maintaining accurate records, works effectively with mínimal supervision.
  • Strong understanding of the requirements of The Workplace Safety and Health Act, the regulations pursuant to the Act and related legislation, and the Ministry of Labor.
  • Knowledge of the interface between labour and management in the workplace.
