The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is hiring creative, friendly, and passionate arts educators who are looking to build their careers in culture.

The Job
Under the primary supervision of the Public Programs Coordinator, and as part of the gallery's Education Department, the Educational Program Instructor will:

  • Deliver high level educational programs to students in grades JK
  • 12; Facilitating exhibition tours, and art activities in the studio
  • Research gallery exhibitions, and exhibiting artists to supplement training packages; Customizing and adapting programs to meet the needs of our diverse audience
  • Prioritize safety, and confirm that the studio, equipment, and supplies are appropriate to the group, activity, and environment, adapting it as needed
  • Prepare, and organize art supplies; Setup studio equipment including tables/chairs
  • Travel to outreach programs as required
  • Establish, and maintain positive relationships with students, teachers, staff and volunteers; Provide excellent customer service
  • Maintain studio cleanliness, and art supply inventory; reference studio etiquette booklet each shift
  • Complete timecard entry in a timely manner
  • Adhere to all City of Markham expectations, policies and procedures; Ensure certifications and all mandatory trainings are completed, and up to date
  • Collect feedback, review procedures, and recommend ways to improve programs and department
  • Advise the Program Coordinator of any customer service issues, complaints or inquiries.
  • Other programming related activities as assigned.

  • A passion for arts and culture; An interest in art history, and visual art studio practices
  • Effective leadership skills with the ability to prioritize, and adapt in a fastpaced environment
  • Exceptional communication, and customer service skills
  • Excellent research and development skills
  • A second language

Qualifications
-
Must be available to work on Mondays and Tuesdays. May be required to work additional days, evenings or weekends depending on special event bookings.

  • Postsecondary education in art, art history or related field (visual art, education, arts administration, community arts programming preferred) or pursuing a Teaching Certificate in an arts related field.
  • One to two years' experience developing and facilitating arts programming in a gallery or museum setting
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Arts Curriculum an asset
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office 365 an asset
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certificate as recognized by the WSIB

  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
