Reporting to the Manager of Plant and Facilities Operations you will be responsible for ensuring that the Hospital grounds are kept in an attractive and pleasant condition that fosters a positive reaction from within the neighboring community. Outdoor duties include grass cutting, weeding, planting, cleaning, snow removal and the coordination of a variety of these duties as weather conditions prevail. Indoor duties include assisting the plant operators (JTPO) in a variety of job task′s, delivering and stocking parts, cleaning mechanical/electrical rooms, and all other general maintenance duties as assigned.

The successful applicant must contribute to creating a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff and others, working in compliance with the hospital code of conduct and the provisions of health and safety policies and legislation. Utilizes protective equipment provided and identifies and reports hazards.

Requirements:

• High School Graduate

• Minimum one year recent working experience in a maintenance/industrial environment

• Knowledge of operation of mechanical tools and equipment

• Horticultural and previous grounds maintenance experience

• Demonstrated skills in the operation of lawn care equipment

• Manual dexterity to handle equipment and supplies

• Able to deal efficiently and effectively with people

• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision

• Good communication and interpersonal skills

• Demonstrated physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position under various weather conditions

• Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area

• Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public

• Demonstrates values consistent with SHN′s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.

• Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards

• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community

• Excellent work performance and attendance

Asset:

• 1 year experience in a maintenance capacity within a hospital environment is preferred

• Millwright or equivalent certification would be an asset

• Experience with mechanical repair for industrial equipment and hospital beds

• Working knowledge of hazardous materials

• Knowledge of WHMIS.

Physical Demands:

• Walking, standing, climbing, bending, reaching, lifting kg.)

• Exposure to heat and cold

• Handling of chemicals, solvents and hazardous materials.
