Your Opportunity:

The Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean (the Dean) is the chief academic officer of the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). All UTM academic departments, the Academic Skills Centre, and the Office of the Registrar report to the Dean. The Dean has a very wide range of responsibilities, including authority over the academic budget of the campus.

Working with the Dean, the Assistant Dean in the Office of the Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean ensures that UTM meets the challenges of increased autonomy and enrolment growth through the establishment of effective procedures, protocols, guidelines, and structures.

In this respect, the Assistant Dean will assume senior responsibilities for issues that span all academic units at UTM.

Reporting to the Dean, the duties of the Assistant Dean are complex and demand a high level of responsibility and responsiveness to ensure that the Office of the Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean (OVPAD) is effective in carrying out the Dean's mandate in a way that commands the respect of other senior offices at UTM and the University at large.

As an integral member of the senior management team of the University of Toronto Mississauga, the Assistant Dean will have demonstrated leadership in administrative, human resource, financial, and strategic matters.


The Assistant Dean is responsible for facilitating, implementing, and coordinating the academic priorities and directions established by the Dean; and the implementation of short and long-term academic, financial, and space plans for the units within the Dean's portfolio.

They provide oversight and strategic management of the Dean's budgets, academic human resource matters, academic programs, and all aspects of academic change.


In collaboration with other senior academic and administrative colleagues, the Assistant Dean plays a key leadership role in the development and implementation of procedures and structures, helping to ensure that they conform to University protocols and policies.

They play a key role in connecting the Office of the Dean laterally to the other administrative units at UTM, as well as in facilitating the vertical connections between the Office of the Dean and the various academic, and academic support, units on the Mississauga campus, and throughout the tri-campus university.


You will contribute to the mission by:

  • Providing high level leadership and strategic advice to the Dean, Vice-Deans, Associate Deans, Chairs, and Directors of Institutes and Programs on a wide range of complex proposals, strategies for addressing issues, new initiatives, policy matters, changes, processes, projects, and other issues to align with the campus's strategic short
- and long-range plans, including advice on strategic resource allocation, impact of enrolment and program changes on overall operating budget and resource requirements, impact of structural changes (consolidating or separating departments etc.), and changes to policies and procedures.

  • Acting as a top advisor to the Dean: identifying, advising, and overseeing critical strategic, administrative, financial and operational issues within OVPAD that require the attention of the Dean and Vice-Deans; identifying strategic issues that require intervention; advocating on behalf of the Dean to advance the priorities of the portfolio.
  • Identifying the need for new or modified academic strategies, programs, procedures, and systems based on the understanding and analysis of departmental or campus needs, strategic initiatives, and campus objectives.
  • Overseeing the operations of OVPAD to ensure that it runs efficiently and optimally; ensuring that proper business processes and systems are implemented and consistently followed in order to facilitate the work of the Dean, Vice-Deans, and Associate Deans.
