Posting Closing Date: 6/17/23The job partners with the teacher to implement instructional plans and activities in a high school science laboratory.

In response to teacher's requests the job prepares chemical solutions, assembles equipment and materials for science classes which includes Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The job assists the teacher with laboratory experiments and demonstrations adhering to safe practices and safe use of equipment, materials and chemicals and the proper disposal thereof.

The work is done in compliance with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Legislation and regulations.

The job helps teachers in completing assignments and activities for students.

Additionally, the job maintains lab equipment, washes up the lab, sterilizes glassware, and maintains information relating to expenditures. The job is responsible for inventory control to ensure materials, supplies and equipment is readily available.


Responsibilities:


  • Instructional support
  • Work with the Science Department to support the delivery of the curriculum
  • Assist the teacher in identifying projects and activities
  • Set up laboratory experiments by preparing chemical solutions, assembling equipment and materials for multiple classes
  • Test experiments and laboratory set up prior to implementation and alter or modify plans to meet class objectives, educational goals and resolve problems
  • Assist teacher in the safety training of students, school staff and volunteers
  • Assist in demonstrating the appropriate and safe use of chemicals and laboratory equipment and proper disposal of chemicals and contaminated materials in accordance with government legislation and regulations
  • Laboratory support
  • Ensure the laboratory is maintained in a safe and sanitary manner
  • Label chemicals and solutions in accordance with WHMIS legislation
  • Properly store and dispose of chemicals within standard operating procedures that comply with legislation
  • Maintain live materials required to support the Science curriculum
  • Dismantle, clean and store laboratory equipment and materials upon completion of classes
  • Arrange for outside maintenance and equipment repair as required
  • Order and maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment and materials
  • Assist Department Head in tracking of budgetary requirements
  • Monitor and track expenditures and laboratory budget
  • Set up and maintain laboratory schedules
  • Educational team support
  • Participate as part of the educational team
  • Attend school meetings and participate in special events and demonstrations
  • Assist substitute teachers in class and school orientation
  • Participate on a crossdistrict laboratory support team

Job Qualifications
High School, plus two year diploma in Laboratory Sciences, or related area, plus two years directly related experience

  • General knowledge of high school level science curriculum and a depth of knowledge in physics, chemistry and biology
  • Considerable knowledge of classroom and laboratory routines
  • Working knowledge of instructional techniques, scientific terminology, laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures and scientific procedures
  • Knowledge of safety standards and the safe use and disposal of equipment, materials and chemicals acquired through training in Occupational Health and Safety and WHMIS is essential
  • Knowledge in First Aid and CPR
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Office 365, Word, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Legislation specifically related to student records
  • Knowledge of the district and school policies, procedures and programs, and an understanding of the Alberta Education curriculum
  • Ability to work in partnership with the teacher to plan and implement instructional activities in the lab
  • Strong organizational skills are required to coordinate the many aspects of the position
  • Strong planning, problem solving, research and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and to manage conflicting priorities
  • Ability to develop and maintain communication with high school students, staff and teachers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Ability to work with numbers and attention to details
