Position Summary:

This position is responsible for planning and coordinating all aspects of Yard, Shunt, and Top Pick operations.

Working with the Yard Manager, the Yard Supervisor plays an integral role to ensuring high productivity levels and overall operational throughput.

This position is required to communicate closely with multiple departments to reduce costs, maximize throughput for the dock and transportation departments, ensure reporting accuracy, reduce dwell times, and maintain high levels of safety.


Key responsibilities

  • Determines staffing needs based on workload and schedules staff accordingly.
  • Analyze and coordinate daily yard operations and make certain that the yard is always accurate and fluid.
  • Communicate closely with the Planning, Operations, and Transportation and Logistics departments to execute plans to effectively service Maersk, 3rd party trucking fleets, and Operational requirements.
  • Reviews and updates operational procedures as necessary and ensures they are communicated to and understood by the employees and stakeholders.
  • Tracks productivity and qualifies performance by individual, function, and department.
  • Manages payroll of the department, ensures premium rates and overtime are entered accurately and able to meet payroll deadlines.
  • Manage the operational hours of the Class 1 Operators.
  • Support and direct shunt drivers, top pick operators, and gatehouse staff.
  • Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed.
  • Conduct frequent internal audits regarding yard safety, housekeeping, and security.
  • Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances.
  • Work with the Maintenance Department to ensure that the equipment is safe for operation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises 15+ employees across multiple shifts.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Appraising employee performance; assist with annual performance appraisal feedback.
  • Disciplining employees and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Educational Background:


  • College/university diploma with focus on transportation / operations management or equivalent experience in logistics and transportation preferred.

Technical skills/job knowledge:


  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Applications
  • System knowledge: TMS, YMS
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Superior planning ability
  • Critical and strategic thinking
  • Considerable knowledge of SSLs and offdock operations
  • Experience with container stack yards

Pay:
$65,000.00-$70,000.00 per year
