The Child Development Specialist (CDS) is an integral part of Community Service Delivery.

As a member of a multi-disciplinary team based at Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY), the CDS provides early intervention services using a family-centered approach for infants and pre-school children with special needs/disabilities.

As one of the first contacts within the Children's disability Services program, this position supports families as they adjust to a diagnosis as well as provide information and referrals to other resources and supports available to the family.

Qualifications:

Essential:


  • Postsecondary degree or diploma in Early Childhood Education Developmental Studies, Family Social Sciences or relevant discipline
  • Extensive experience in an early childhood environment focusing on children with support needs. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Indepth knowledge and experience with disabilities inclusion, early child development stages, and basic approaches and techniques in early intervention
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and exercise initiative in a complex work environment with high volume caseloads and competing demands
  • Experience working effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including families, community service workers, preschool programs, agencies, therapists, etc.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Clear and concise verbal communication skills
  • Clear and concise written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Outlook

Duties:


Reporting to the Early Intervention Program Manager, the CDS works with families of pre-school children who have disabilities/special needs and in close liaison with a multi-disciplinary team, which may include Community Service Workers, preschool programs, other agencies and therapists.

The CDS conducts assessments and monitoring of child development through the preschool years and develops an individual early intervention plan for each child.

The CDS also assists with transitions into early learning settings such as preschool, childcare or school settings. Services are provided within the home and/or community setting and are delivered through consultation and direct service. The service is focused on coaching the parent or caregiver to implement the recommended strategies.

The CDS also identifies a family's needs beyond early intervention and in many cases acts in a service coordination role.

In addition to the above, the CDS provides teaching, training and support within the early intervention field to families/care providers and the community via parent education programs and community presentations.
