Job Summary

This position is for a Research Coordinator for a CIHR funded project called
_Reducing Stigma and Promoting Social Inclusion of People with Dementia: Putting Social Citizenship into Practice_.

The purpose of the project is to develop a more refined and practical understanding of social citizenship by building on the lived experiences of people with dementia, and to explain and demonstrate how community programs can support social citizenship of people with dementia.

The Research Coordinator will be responsible for managing and overseeing day to day research operations.

This position will be based at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia, with offices in the School of Nursing and School of Social Work.

Organizational Status


The Research Coordinator will report directly to the Research Manager, who in turn reports directly to the three project leads, Deborah O Connor, Alison Phinney, and Jim Mann.

The Research Coordinator will work in collaboration as a member of an interdisciplinary team with academic researchers, people with dementia, and community partners.

Work Performed

  • Set up and implement systems for developing and sustaining effective community partnerships at organizational and individual levels.
  • Design and modify complex research approaches and provide input into developing data collection tools.
  • Develop and oversee data protocols (e.g. data generation, management and analysis).
  • Conduct complex analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Plan and organize knowledge translation activities and meetings.
  • Write reports and contribute to preparation of manuscripts and conference presentations.
  • Provide instruction and training for research staff.
  • Supervise, schedule, and train research staff; make recommendations with respect to hiring and provide input into evaluation of staff performance.
  • Monitor budget expense forecasting and maintenance of financial reports
Consequence of Error/Judgement

The quality of the research and the performance of research staff and research assistants will be affected.

Supervision Received

The Research Coordinator will receive supervision from the Research Manager. They may also receive supervision from the Principal Investigator(s).

Supervision Given

The Community Research Coordinator will be responsible for planning and distributing work assignments to research team members (i.e. students or staff at a lower work classification), and will also be responsible for instructing these team members about existing research unit procedures.

Minimum Qualifications


Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, health or social sciences with special focus on aging or seniors care preferred.
  • Experience working in a research environment using qualitative research methods, also familiarity with communitybased and participatory approaches to research and demonstrated ability to work according to these principles.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary research teams and demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, including members of the community and health care and social service providers.
  • Experience interacting with older people including those who are frail and/or living with dementia in community and health care environments is critical.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills to engage with community members, including people living with dementia.
  • Ability to be selfdirected, and to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, analytic
