The Manitoba government is seeking highly motivated Assistant Safety Advisor to work with the department of Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure.

This position offers reliable and full time employment with a defined pension plan.

The Health & Safety Branch is mandated to manage risks to the safety, health and well being of employees, visitors and the public arising out of the work activities performed by or on behalf of the Department.

The Assistant Safety Advisor is tasked with managing risks related to the Department's transportation, infrastructure and physical assets.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Possess, or be able to obtain within one year, and maintain a valid First Aid Instructors Certificate.
  • Must have a Valid Class 5 Driver's licence and be able to travel extensively within the province to worksites by ground, by water, and by air transportation.
  • Possess, or be able to obtain within one year, Construction Safety Officer (or equivalent) designation.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the required job duties (lifting/carrying kg, sit and standing for prolonged periods, wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), walking on rough terrain, climbing stairs and ladders, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, operating vehicles and work in adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications:

Essential:


  • Experience participating with Workplace Health & Safety Committees.
  • Experience preparing training packages and delivering training workshops.
  • Knowledge of road construction, preservation and maintenance activities and related equipment.
  • Experience working with MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated leadership in fostering a safety and health culture.
  • Knowledge of Federal/Provincial legislation, recognized risk management principles and safe work practices/procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Highly developed written communication skills with the ability to prepare reports.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and build rapport with diverse work teams and groups.

Duties:


Reporting to the Safety Advisor, the Assistant Safety Advisor provides consultative and technical support to Regional Managers and other operational units within Regional Operations as required.

The incumbent may conduct program audits and periodic inspections of construction, preservation, and maintenance projects and other miscellaneous non-program activities.

The incumbent will assist the Safety Advisor in the co-ordination and delivery of training services.

This Assistant Safety Advisor position is required in order to assist in the delivery of a Regional Safety Program that contributes to the safety of the traveling public, contractors and employees who deliver Winter Maintenance Operations during the winter months as well as Construction and Maintenance of roads and highways during the non-winter months.
