Description
The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience.

Successful applicants will have opportunities to work with their mentor on a research project, attend our Lunch 'n' Learns and participate in the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day where they will have an opportunity to present their findings to the organization and its visitors.

Dr.

Gillian King is a Distinguished Senior Scientist within the Bloorview Research Institute, Canada Research Chair in Optimal Care for Children with Disabilities, and a Professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto.

Her research focuses on psychosocial aspects of intervention for children/youth with disabilities and their families.

Dr. Eric Smart, an Occupational Therapist, will co-supervise one of the projects concerning the friendships of children/youth with disabilities. His research interests include parent engagement in children's therapy services and supporting family-centred care across practice settings.

This literature review project will identify and critically appraise existing literature on friendship, to inform a planned research grant submission.

Dr. Kate Einarson will co-supervise another project. She is a Knowledge Translation Specialist with interest in client engagement. This literature review project will inform the development of a knowledge translation grant in this topic area.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the ongoing project described above
  • Literature searching, preparation of written summaries and syntheses of literature, assistance with development and testing of educational/knowledge translation materials
  • Interaction with project team members (including researchers, clinicians, educators, clients, and families)
  • Preparation of a presentation for the summer student Research Day
  • Additional duties assigned as required

Qualifications

  • Student must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program (3rd or 4th year), or medical school
  • Student studying life sciences, arts and humanities, social sciences or enrolled in other relevant programs will be given priority
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 80% or over
  • Student must have successfully completed at least 1 research methods course
  • CORE ethics training, required
  • Experience with Excel and literature searching, required
  • Experience and/or interest in reducing social isolation and increasing social connections for children with disabilities, preferred
  • Experience working with clinicians is preferred and experience working with children/youth with disabilities is required
  • Experience with EndNote reference management software, preferred
  • Able to communicate effectively with others in an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated understanding of familycentred service delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work independently while demonstrating accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work to ensure deadlines are met, required
  • Exposure to or experience with qualitative research, preferred
