Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the setup of laboratory classrooms with the required resources, materials, reagents, etc. needed for instructional lab exercises for the various courses offered in the Faculty of Science, by working and collaborating with department stakeholders (i.

e:
faculty, lab instructors, etc.).

  • Responsible for the preparation of various reagents, as well as performing tasks and assays related to the various courses offered in the Faculty of Science, predominantly those related to cell biology, biochemistry, and microbiology.
  • Contributes to the inventory management of all chemicals and other labrelated materials, including stocking routine inventory items, obtaining quotes, and inventory tracking on databases (spreadsheets).
  • Responsible for the proper storage of materials.
  • Responsible for the operation, training, maintenance, and verification as well as inventory management of all laboratory equipment, scientific instruments, and tools (as required).
  • Responsible for performing housekeeping duties such as cleaning, organizing and restocking laboratory facilities as needed, autoclaving glassware, solutions, laboratory reagents, and other materials as needed, as well as waste removal, and the safe disposal of all hazardous material.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations related to the safe handling and use of biological materials, chemicals, and radiation material.
  • Always enforces lab safety standards and protocols across all disciplines.
  • Supports the Lab and Field Safety Manager in the development and delivery of lab, field, and environment safety orientation and training programs, appropriate to the role (i.

e:
student, technician, researcher, custodial staff, contractors, etc.) and in compliance with appropriate regulations.

  • Contributes to the development and updating of SOPs, as needed.
  • Supports inspections required on CUE's laboratory infrastructure (i.

e:
emergency shower(s), eyewash equipment, biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, spill kits, and first aid kits).

  • Responds to emergency situations and follows lab
- and field-specific procedures related to emergency situations.

  • Maintains aptitude in areas of expertise and seeks professional development, as needed.

Education and Qualifications

  • A BSc or MSc degree (MSc preferred) in cell biology, biochemistry, or microbiology is required.
  • Ten or more years of related professional experience as a lab technician, preferably with at least five or more years in a postsecondary institution.
  • Five or more years of experience in a Containment Level 2 laboratory setting and associated procedural requirements.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in WHIMIS, first aid and health, safety and Environment (HSE) practices in research laboratories is required.
  • Knowledge of regulations and applicable legislation for biosafety, chemical safety, or radiation safety is required.
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office and Googlebased platforms is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in written and verbal form.
  • Strong attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, sound judgment and discretion in all interactions is required.
  • Experience managing competing deadlines and working with a large degree of independence is required.
  • A positive attitude and a demonstrated ability to be a team player.
  • Effective problemsolving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment as necessary.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties, such as lifting boxes (<20kgs), and there will be repetitive motion activities (i.e. aliquots, media preparation, etc.).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check results.
