GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY


The Data Governance Specialist is responsible for promoting and supporting the needs of the Data Office and the data governance program during the mobilization, as well as business as usual periods.

This position supports enterprise-wide business units and functions by providing guidance, advice, and direction on all matters related to SGI's business-driven data governance program.

The Data Governance Specialist acts as the primary point of contact and the face of the Data Office for all functions in relation to data governance.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Promotes and supports the mobilization and business as usual (BAU) needs of the Data Office and the data governance program and operating model.
  • Assists in setting up the Data Governance organizational structure and supporting Data Stewards in all business and corporate functions.
  • Contributes to the Data Governance initiatives and assists in setting up the Data Governance Council framework.
  • Responsible for supporting the Data Governance mandate on behalf of the Data Office and overall objectives set by and with the Data & Analytics Management Council (DMC).
  • Coordinates all activities, actions, and decisions of the DMC and ensures that Council meetings run smoothly and are appropriately documented.
  • Provides handson guidance and support to all business and corporate functions (engaging other Data Office team members as required) on Data Governance frameworks, policies, standards, processes, and leading practices necessary to implement and operate an effective data governance program.
  • Develops positive, collaborative relationships with Data Stewards in business and corporate functions through regular meetings and communications.
  • Supports business and corporate functions with their ongoing data stewardship operations.
  • Provides guidance and assists business and corporate function Data Stewards in developing iterative tactical action plans that result in BAU data management.
  • Coordinates training for the data stewardship community and jointly determines emerging needs for lines of business and corporate functions.
  • Assists the Director, Data Strategy in the definition and support of the Data Management Framework and the Data Policy across the organization.
  • Assists in mobilizing data management policies and standards and defining metrics to drive consistent adoption of such standards.
  • Assists in the successful implementation and deployment of Data Governance tools.
  • Collaborates with IT and data governance stakeholders to oversee and ensure adoption of Data Governance standards and policies.
  • Develops collaborative working relationships with members of the Data Office team, the data stewardship community, and IT stakeholders to promote adoption of data management practices across the organization.
  • Stays up to date with leading data management practices.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS- Knowledge of best practice data governance initiatives, policy, and practices.- Knowledge of data management principles, technical concepts, and tools (e.g., in relation to data lineage, data models, data quality, data risk control, data literacy, reference data management, metadata management, etc.).- Knowledge of business and technology issues related to the management of information assets and approaches related to data protection.- Knowledge of data-related government regulatory requirements and emerging trends and issues.- Skill in working in both a technical and business context; able to translate technical concepts into easy-to-understand business language.- Skill in performing root cause analysis.- Skill in using Microsoft Office suite of products.


EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS- Four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study, such as Computer Science, Information Management, Business, or defined equivalency.
