Description

The Transit Planner, through research and analysis, conducts planning work to guide and design the current and future conventional transit services for the Transit department.

This position is responsible for developing standards, guidelines, and short and long-term service plans to meet the community's needs in an efficient manner.

The Transit Planner position is crucial in developing, coordinating and monitoring service standards and plans that guide the service provision and expenditures within the operating and capital budgets.

**This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 12 months


Responsibilities:


  • Conduct planning activities associated with short & longerterm transit service and infrastructure to ensure safe, efficient and effective services that balances the needs of the community
  • Provide leadership to the project team for the successful delivery of service planning projects and other special projects as required using a project management approach
  • Coordinate with customers, public, stakeholders and other Departments to ensure service policies, procedures and plans meet the community and customer's needs now and, in the future Oversee the installation and removal of bus stops, bus benches and shelters, and other passenger amenities to ensure excellent customer service and accessibility

Qualifications and Skills

  • This position requires technical expertise and strong analytical and problemsolving skills to analyse problems and issues, and develop solutions based on professional judgement, experience in operations, service design standards/guidelines, and best industry practices
  • Experience developing solutions and making recommendations on service changes with significant financial implications and impact on the community wellbeing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management process and practices
  • Comprehensive knowledge of practices and principles of transit planning obtained through education in Planning/Engineering, and experience with transit planning and operations, transportation and land use planning
  • Knowledge of land use and transportation planning, and how transit relates
  • Solid knowledge of market research, demand analysis, and statistical theories and methods
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Degree or diploma in urban or transportation planning, engineering, CET certified under ASET, or a related field
  • Training in transit planning and scheduling would be an asset
  • Three to five years of experience in transit planning and operations
  • Demonstrated project coordination and management skills to guide the development of service plans and special projects Knowledge of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, mainly Strathcona County, is an asset
