What is the opportunity?


As Counsel, you will support the goals of the Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Banking & Enterprise Services, and Managing Counsel, Canadian Banking Operations and Estates.

These goals include achieving the business/operations, strategic priorities and operational performance requirements of Law Group which are focused on solution oriented advice and responsiveness.

You will also provide support and guidance to various business partners, stakeholders and functional groups in the areas of banking operations, estates, registered plans, powers of attorney, incapacity, trusts and guardianship in both common and civil law jurisdictions.


What will you do?

  • Identify, assess and mitigate legal, reputational and regulatory risk relating to escalations, inquiries and exception requests.
  • Deliver sound and costeffective legal advice to the business, stakeholders and functional groups.
  • Review relevant legislation and case law that may impact the Bank and update stakeholders, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with policy owners and update the Bank's internal policies and procedures based on the Bank's risk tolerance, changes to legislation in areas of responsibilities.
  • Actively participate and engage with the Canadian Bankers Association in providing feedback on legislative changes and other issues impacting financial institutions.
  • Create legal tools, checklists and playbooks with a view of increasing efficiency and consistency in managing and responding to escalations and inquiries.
  • Provide legal guidance and mentorship to paraprofessionals when responding to escalations and inquiries and in advancing team projects.
  • Foster an environment of collaboration within the team to achieve professional excellence and a superior client experience.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have:


  • Bachelor of Law from an accredited law school and qualified to practice law in a Canadian jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Proficient in corporate law matters.
  • Superior oral and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, make independent decisions and work under tight deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Selfstarter with strong client focus and the ability to take ownership of key projects.

Nice-to-have:


  • Proficient in both French and English.
  • Familiarity with the Civil Code of Quebec.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • The ability to prioritize matters effectively and work in a fast paced environment.
  • Superior organizational management skills and the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
