The primary mission of ImPaKT is to advance research of infectious diseases by providing state of the art imaging tools within containment level (CL) 2 and 3 laboratories.


Responsibilities:


The Research Technician will work under the direction of the facility director, and in collaboration with faculty, staff and students, to prepare and conduct experiments following set protocols and procedures in the ImPaKT research facility, including running the day-to-day experiments required for the SARS-COV-2 surveillance project.

The role contributes to providing training and oversight to students and users of the laboratory, assists with laboratory maintenance, upkeep and organization, and the ordering supplies as required.

In addition, this role assists to ensure that the equipment and instrumentation is maintained and operational, assists with troubleshooting as required, and provides assistance to the Director of ImPaKT in record keeping for the maintenance of government issued licensures and related processes.


Qualifications:


  • Education:
  • 4-year University bachelor's degree in a Science related field

Experience:

  • 2 years' experience working in a research laboratory environment in the area of basic sciences
  • Experience running standard operation procedures (SOPs) on a government or clinical project
  • Experience with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) with demonstrated proficiency with reproducible results and quantitative curves
  • Experience following government rules and regulations (Public Health Agency of Canada) including record keeping for maintenance of licenses preferred
  • Experience working in a containment level 3 lab with risk group 3 pathogens an asset
  • Experience with university/government lab certification testing and requirements preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with laboratory decontamination procedures (i.e. autoclaves, effluent decontamination systems)
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability along with handson expertise in technical support
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
  • Ability to write clear, concise procedural documentation
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with technical and nontechnical users
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
  • Strong customer service skills to handle enquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
  • Positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
  • Basic understanding of financial statements
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours and travel on occasion
  • A strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work with supervision
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to multitask and maintain and organized and effective personal work environment
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage activities both for self and others effectively
  • Ability to work well under pressure and use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with associates and colleagues including senior management
