    The Musqueam and UBC Youth Educational and Bridge Through Sport Coordinator will be required to work outside of normal office hours to support community programming. A portion of their time will be spent at Musqueam supporting this community programming, with the remainder spent at the First Nations Longhouse in UBC's Vancouver Campus.

    Job Summary

    The Musqueam & UBC Bridge Through Sport Program (BTS) strives to support Indigenous youth in creating fair, equitable and supportive learning environments. The Musqueam Departments of Education, Recreation, Health, Social Development, and Lands, Resources and Treaty work with UBC Recreation, the FNHL and numerous other campus partners to create exciting community spaces and programs. The Musqueam & UBC BTS Program operates different programs at Musqueam including BTS Reading, BTS Math & Science, BTS Homework Club, Musqueam Youth Program, Musqueam Community Garden, the annual Musqueam and UBC Youth Soccer Tournament, UBC & UNYA Homework Program. This position will also provide support for Indigenous youth programs that visit UBC.

    The Musqueam and UBC Youth Educational and Bridge Through Sport Coordinator will be required to work outside of normal office hours to support community programming.

    Organizational Status
    This position reports to the Manager, Student Engagement and Community Programs. The Musqueam and UBC Youth Educational and Bridge Through Sport Coordinator is expected to work in strong collaboration with FNHL staff, the Musqueam Indian Band and all campus partners who work to support Indigenous students and youth. This position requires the highest level of tact, discretion and sensitivity with a particular focus on Indigenous community engagement. The incumbent is expected to establish deep understanding and knowledge of the departmental functions of the FNHL and is able to work independently under broad direction and objectives.

    Work Performed

    Responsibilities include:

    1. This position requires an ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

    2. UBC is committed to prioritizing the relationship with the Musqueam community to promote education, recreation and well‐being through partnership in developing youth and community programming:

    • Maintains ongoing dialogue and liaison with Musqueam Council Members, Musqueam Administration and the Musqueam Community in regards to joint programing and the maintenance of cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships.
    • Liaises with Musqueam Departments of Recreation, Health, Social Development and Education and UBC Department of Athletics and Recreation in relation to joint UBC and Musqueam programming.
    • Manages existing relationships and develops new relationships with campus partners, stakeholders and external community partners to inform and implement Musqueam & BTS programs

    3. Musqueam events and youth engagement:

    • Recruitment, training, supervision, and mentoring of a team of Work Learn students and to provide advice, guidance and support to ensure they are able to effectively supervise student staff.
    • Responsible for overseeing the day to day operations for the Musqueam & UBC BTS program including coordinating of programming, budgeting and space planning. Procures necessary goods and supplies for Musqueam & UBC BTS programs and events.
    • Coordinates and oversees complex event coordination and programming for all combined Musqueam & UBC BTS programs and events. This includes Afterschool Clubs, High School Clubs and the Annual Musqueam & UBC Soccer Tournament.
    • The BTS Coordinator will work with representatives from UBC Recreation to support programming and share UBC resources.
    • Acts as the main contact and point person for BTS Work Learn Program Coordinators, UBC Recreation volunteers and Musqueam staff. Supports the Musqueam & UBC BTS program onsite at Musqueam two days a week and on evenings and weekends as necessary.
    • Conducts evaluation and assessment of Musqueam & UBC BTS program by collecting and analyzing data, writing reports and communicating the outcomes and impacts of the Musqueam & UBC BTS program.

    4. Other local community youth partnerships:

    • Represents UBC and the FNHL as a liaison and advocate of partnership programs. Facilitates onsite connections for community partners (Urban Native Youth Program, The Friendship Centre, UBC Active Kids, the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Community College, the Vancouver School Board) throughout the year.
    • Liason between youth engagement programs and FNHL, supporting tours and programming for visiting school and other community Indigenous youth groups.

    5. UBC Youth Engagement programs (in collaboration with Longhouse Building Manager about facilities):

    • Works with the youth Cedar Program Coordinator, the Youth Summer Science Program Coordinator, the Museum of Anthropology Native Youth Program Manager and the Verna Kirkness Foundation and other youth program coordinator across the UBC campus to successfully engage with the Longhouse.

    6. Works with the FNHL Research and Communications team:

    • In the creation of strategies and the development of plans through establishing and initiating surveys, and evaluating results.
    • To develop a communications and social media plan for FNHL youth engagement programs, providing clear communications through a wide range of mediums including e-mail, web, print, phone and newsletters. to develop a social media strategy and content for FNHL youth engagement Programs. Updates the BTS website as necessary.

    • Manages confidential and sensitive information with tact, discretion and diplomacy for student staff and students, and abides by UBC privacy rules set out in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
    • Coaches and mentor's student staff and student leaders to deliver student initiatives, programs and services and to enhance their career development.
    • During the on-going COVID-19 protocols will work to find ways to connect and support the Musqueam and urban Indigenous community through on-line programming and connection when and if in-person events are not possible.
    • Performs other duties and takes on additional responsibilities as required, such as assisting in FNHL Indigenous student programs with events and engagement.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement

    This position requires a sophisticated level of judgment, tact, discretion and initiative. Errors in judgment with the internal or external stakeholders could have negative impact on the First Nations House of Learning and the University, resulting in legal suits, poor public relations, financial costs or loss of credibility. Work must often meet tight deadlines and requires the incumbent to perform well under pressure. The incumbent will be expected to respond well to unexpected circumstances and exercise good independent judgment. Must demonstrate exceptional public relations and interpersonal skills in dealing with the high-profile members of Indigenous community, the university, staff and faculty, senior administrators and member of the government.

    Inappropriate or errant communication of sensitive issues could have a serious impact and have legal implications.

    Supervision Received
    This position is supervised and works under the direction of the Manager, Student Engagement and Community Programs. Work is reviewed for achievement of University goals and soundness of advice and judgment.

    Minimum Qualifications
    University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Due to nature of the program and in accordance with Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, there is a preference for Indigenous applicants (First Nations, Inuit, or Metis)
    • Deep understanding and lived experience with common Indigenous ways of knowing
    • Previous experience with supervision of student staff (including hiring, training and performance management) would be an asset.
    • Deep understanding of systemic and personal barriers that Indigenous students face in accessing and pursuing postsecondary education.
    • Experience working either professionally or as a student in a post-secondary environment in program development and program management.
    • Experience coordinating complex programs including development, planning, and implementation of ideas collaboratively with stakeholder groups.
    • Exceptional communications skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to communicate well in an intercultural environment.
    • Proven ability to organize events and coordinate student development programs.
    • Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member.
    • Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, respectful, and effective manner.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.
    • A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking.
