About the Animal Facilities


The Animal Facilities are a primary service division whose purpose is to serve the McMaster research community and ensure all animals housed at our seven sites are cared for ethically and humanely.


New Leadership Opportunity


The Faculty of Health Sciences is seeking a Manager, Administration to provide effective and efficient management of and oversee all financial, strategic planning, human resources, risk management and security-related aspects of the animal facilities.

The Manager, Administration reports to the Director, Animal Facilities and works alongside the Manager, Animal Care in providing support to the McMaster University research community as it relates to the use of animals in biomedical research and teaching in a large, complex department.

The position oversees many key administrative functions associated with developing, implementing, and maintaining the facilities. This includes fee-for-service, cost recovery, budgets, and subsidized functions. It also requires managing relationships with faculty members, government agencies, and partner institutions with services, supplies and governance.


The Manager of Administration is a member of the Animal Facilities leadership team that is responsible for all aspects of strategic and operational planning for animal facilities.


The Manager, Administration is supported by two administrative assistants, one accounting assistant and one financial coordinator and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the animal care team, in the absence of the Manager, Animal Care.


Core Accountabilities
In a collaborative team environment, which embraces the values of integrity, teamwork and inclusivity, the Manager, Administration will serve as a leader and is accountable for the following:


  • Financial -
    Responsible for all financial oversight of the Animal Facilities, including developing facility business plan, budget development and implementation, managing financial resources across all 8 sites, approval of financial transactions, procurement and contract negotiation, and monthly auditing and of all accounts for projecting fiscal results and planning.

Strategic Planning:


  • Assists the Director to develop and implement short and longterm plans for the Unit to ensure the effective and efficient use of research infrastructure resources to support the strategic research plans for the Faculty and University.

Human Resources

  • Manages the human resources activities for direct reports with respect to creating job descriptions, interviewing, hiring, performance reviews, progressive discipline measures, and scheduling of work assignments for staff. In addition, responsible for ensuring all human resources policies and collective bargaining agreement policies are adhered to within the Unit.

Capital Planning:


  • Develops business models for capital investment strategies considering the financial resources and timelines for large equipment replacement, as well as preparing reporting, quotes and submission for equipment funding.

Security

  • Act as lead for the overall security of the facilities, animals, staff and users including providing orientation training, risk management planning, approving security requests to facility and maintenance of security systems.

Technological Resources

  • Responsible for identifying and recommending hardware and software upgrades for the Animal Facilities and for the efficient utilization of technological resources by personnel.
  • Strong strategic planning, budgeting and cost recovery, procurement, business development, contract negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • A proven leader with demonstrated experience achieving positive results managing a team and performing a range of human resources functions including hiring, performance management, workforce planning, and overseeing daytoday operational work activities.
  • Superior leadership competencies, strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to develop collaborative relationships with a diverse group of clients.
