Description

Annapolis Valley First Nation (AVFN) is seeking an experienced carpenter to cover a full time temporary positon with the possibility of extension.

They will report directly to the Housng, Infrastructure and Capital Officer, and will be responsible to construct or repair all aspects of building interiors and exteriors and complete service work required within the relevant Health & Safety guidelines and protocols.


The Carpenters will also be responsible to manage construction Job sites assigned to them in order to ensure projects are completed within set timelines and within set budgets.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Install wooden structures such as roofing framers, joists, partitions, rafters, and stud work.
  • Install shelves, drywall, and insulation.
  • Add fittings and fixtures including door handles, hinges, locks, and closures.
  • Select lumber based on requirements of project and source wood that fits within budget and meets style specifications,
  • Consult with other construction professionals to ensure the best possible results for the final project.
  • Read blueprints and designs prepared by architects, construction professional and ensure they meet building code recommendations and requirements.
  • Install foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using materials such as wood, steel, metal, concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials.
  • Fit and install window frames, door, door frames, door hardware, interior and exterior trim using carpenter's level, plumb bob, and laser levels.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground levels.
  • Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  • Shape and cut materials to specific measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures used in buildings using wood working machines, hand tools, or power tools.
  • Assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks or props using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins or glue.
  • Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace using hand tools.
  • Inspect ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodworks to detect broken or damaged structures.
  • Move necessary materials around jobsites as assigned.
  • Clean up worksite debris.
  • Supervise and provide direction to other construction workers.
  • Provide training and mentoring to other construction workers as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of National Building Codes.
  • Knowledge of NS Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and practices used in the carpentry trade.
  • Extensive knowledge of the qualities of various woods and their adaptability and uses.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and methods used in drywall.
  • Understanding of construction blueprints.
  • Understanding of the Mi'kmaq cultural and political environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Highschool diploma or G.E.D.
  • 35 years of experience.
  • Proven experience with tools, materials and methods used in carpentry.
  • Physically fit and able to work long hours.
  • Valid Driver's license
