Under the general supervision of the Radio Shop Supervisor, the Radio Electronic Installer is responsible for all mobile radio/electronic equipment installations including but not limited to two-way radios, mobile computer terminals, radar, siren and light bars as well as assisting in the design and fabrication of mounting hardware.

Under the guidance of a Senior Radio Electronic Installer or Communication Technologist, this position will assist in the installation and/or repair of fixed site equipment and systems.


As the _Radio Electronic Installer_
you will**:

  • Install mobile equipment, including radio, mobile computer terminals, antennas, radar, siren and light bars, and wiring.
  • Fabricate brackets and fixtures which may involve drilling/cutting wood, metal, or plastics, basic welding, and 3D printing.
  • Remove mobile/radio/electronic equipment from vehicles, clean and overhaul/refurbish light bars and electronic equipment cabling, antennas, fusing and subcomponents such as speakers, microphones, control heads.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting on new installations such as speakers, microphones, control heads.
  • Participate in peer crosstraining and mentorship opportunities on the aspects of the job.
  • Assist in the installations of fixed site equipment including intercom, public address, alarm, radio and audio/visual systems.
  • Tune antennas on mobile radios.
  • Carry/transport equipment, material and stock to and from various locations within the City.
  • Perform work station and site housekeeping tasks including the removal of grease and oil, sweeping and washing down the garage floor, cleaning benched and work stations and other locations as assigned.
  • Maintain a record of tasks performed, material and equipment used, time, appointments and schedule of installations, and other work order details.
  • Perform periodic inventory and related duties including material handling.
  • May be required to work outdoors, climb ladders and work in confined spaces
  • May be required to perform courier duties and/or drive City vehicles.
  • May be required to perform work at various job sites throughout the City.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your education and qualifications include:


  • One (1) year postsecondary training in electrical or electronic technology, or three (3) years progressive training and experience in electronic systems installations.
  • Ability to work with wood, plastic and metal products and associated equipment in the fabrication of special mounting brackets and hardware.
  • Capable of following written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
  • Experience in the safe and correct use of hand power tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, and external contacts, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace policy.
  • Ability to read and interpret RF wattmeter readings is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge and skill in the safe operation of a welder is an asset.

Conditions of employment:


  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License preferably with air brake endorsement.
  • Physically capable of performing all duties of the position which may include, but are not limited to: the ability to lift 50 pounds, bending, crouching, and working with arms overhead for extended period of times.
