Thi K'wasun Youth Mentor


Reporting to both the Director of Operations and assigned Right to Play Program Officer (as per the grant requirements), Thi K'wasun Youth Mentor will primarily be responsible to work as an integral part of the Nanoose First Nation (NFN) Administration.

Thi K'wasun Youth Program has been adapted to include Right to Play content; to deliver community-driven, culturally-relevant play-based programming designed to enhance leadership, self-confidence, and self-efficacy among children and youth.

Through cooperation we create safe and inclusive spaces where children and youth can share their ideas, their hopes and their fears, and learn the skills to become positive agents of change.

What you'll do:

As part of our Youth department team, you will:

  • Coordinate child and youth programming
  • Plan, lead and assess core program
  • Support the planning and implementation of events and initiatives
  • Build partnership and program awareness
  • Administration and program evaluation
- shares some responsibilities/duties with other admin/coordinator team members
- follows established procedures and at times required to use independent judgement

  • Operates at a high level of people interaction and must be able to respond with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy
  • Given the position that includes working in partnership with many departments, confidentiality is key
  • Incumbents' flexibility in availability is an asset.
Other Duties

  • Participate in upcoming fundraisers and meetings
  • Drive our bus to and from scheduled activities. Must have Class 4 or be willing to obtain, and must have a clear drivers abstract
  • Carry out other duties as required

The qualifications, experience, skills and abilities we're looking for:

  • Combination of education and experience
  • Desired, minimum College Diploma, ongoing or complete in the any of the following areas: Community Services (Child and Youth Worker; Recreation and Leisure; Social Service Worker; Early Childhood Education); or equivalent community and/or youth work experience. Studies in teaching and education.
  • Desired, knowledge and/or education in Indigenous culture and worldviews as it is applied to Child and Youth Development (Education, Family and Child Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Services, Health, etc.
  • Professional, adaptable communication style with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence others.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, patience and integrity.
  • Maintains composure in highpressure situations.
  • Resourceful and organized with excellent time management abilities.
  • Able to deliver negative information tactfully and diplomatically when needed. Acts ethically and handles sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Teamoriented with a positive, approachable attitude.
  • Trained in how to effectively facilitate leadership and recreation programming for young people
  • Experience facilitating workshops for groups of 10 or more.
  • Experience in working with youth and children in recreation, arts, and culture programming.
  • Experience in coordinating large events for 50+ people.
  • Knowledge of completing reports and collecting various program data and statistics.
  • Interested in being part of community development.

The conditions you'll be working in:
This is a full-time (35 hours/week) permanent position


Wage:
$ $26.00 per hour.
