Position Summary:
_**In the STEP program, the Youth Counsellor supports young individuals encountering multifaceted employment barriers.

The objective is to secure enduring employment, foster fulfilling careers, access further education or vocational avenues, and ensure success in their professional journeys.

Collaborating within a team, the Youth Counsellor undertakes case management responsibilities and facilitates the provision of impact and high caliber Employment Skills Training.

This encompasses various facets like assessment and intake, devising service plans, advocating for, linking, and orchestrating comprehensive supportive services, as well as monitoring and conducting follow-up activities.

Key Relationships:

_**- Program Coordinator, JHS Durham management team, agency employees, service seekers, and other community agencies such as Ontario Works, Child Welfare, DRPS, local schools and boards, the court system and probation, employers and other related stakeholders.

Assessment and Intake:


  • Evaluate youth eligibility and employment/service needs.
  • Conduct thorough intake assessments for career objectives, barriers, and interpersonal skills.

Counselling and Planning:


  • Utilize counselling models for job readiness evaluations and action plan development.
  • Create individualized action plans based on career aspirations and employment needs.

Support and Skill Enhancement:


  • Provide comprehensive case management and general support.
  • Facilitate mentoring activities to enhance interpersonal and workplace skills.

Workshops and Opportunities:


  • Collaborate in delivering workshops covering various skill sets (stability, readiness, career development, etc.).
  • Contribute to creating Quality Employment Opportunities for youth.

Guidance and Retention Strategies:


  • Implement effective job coaching and retention strategies.

Documentation and Compliance:


  • Maintain updated case notes, progress reports, and client files according to program standards.
  • Manage financial records and proficiently operate office equipment.

Performance and Collaboration:


  • Achieve specified service outcomes and targets promptly.
  • Compile and maintain monthly performancerelated statistical reports.
  • Collaborate with Employment and Training staff for coordinated service delivery and resource utilization.

Educational Background:


  • Possession of postsecondary education in related fields like social service worker, social work, employment counselling, etc.

Continuous Learning and Experience:


  • Willingness to stay updated in career counselling/training, incorporating new practices and tools as needed.
  • Experience in group facilitation/instruction, employment, and general counselling.

Knowledge and Sensitivity:


  • Extensive knowledge of preemployment support methods, retraining opportunities, labour market info, and resources.
  • Demonstration of sensitivity and understanding towards diverse racial, ethnic, disabled, and cultural populations, respecting individuals and considering the impact of actions.

Technical Proficiency:


  • Experience in using Zoom for hosting meetings and various functionalities like polls, breakout rooms, and annotation mode.
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite, and WordPress.

Skills and Attributes:


  • Strong selfmanagement skills to accomplish project goals within set timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, along with interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Capacity to work in an environment demanding statistical data collection, meeting deadlines, and achieving targets.
